the divine miss orton

Had the pleasure of attending the scrumptious Beth Orton’s show at the York Theatre last night. It was fantastic, her voice is incredible, her songs wonderfully bittersweet. She was mainly perfoming in solo acoustic mode, but for a few songs she had a drummer, pianist and M Ward, her support act, on guitar. M Ward was a revelation, he is an amazing finger-picking guitarist, and had some beautiful songs. He looks like a goofy kid, but his voice has a Tom Waits-ish gruffness, and his guitar playing is very impressive.

Kicking off the night was Laura Imbruglia who was really sweet. She sings with her acoustic guitar about punk vegan boys, not being gay and teenage love amongst other things. She had me laughing out loud several times.
All in all a top night out.
