My Location: The New Empire Hotel, Chinatown, Bangkok
I told you i might blog while i was away :)
So i've arrived safe and sound in Bangkok. The flight was uneventful, the same old boring things, lots of queueing, screaming babies, bad movies (except Shaun of the Dead, it's brilliant, 4.5 stars), no sleep till Bangkok.
I was a bit lost when i left the airport. I decided to catch a bus into town. Pity there wasn't one where i needed to go, but valiantly i decided to catch one anyway, presuming it'd be easy to catch a cab to my hotel once i got into town.
I was the only non-Asian face on the bus, and from the sounds of it the only English speaker. I was sat next to a monk in his bright orange gown. I was kind of stressing about where the hell i was and where to get off. But i eventually heard the bus driver say something about Limphini Park, the stop i wanted. So i hopped off at a fairly deserted bus stop. Did i mention this was 11.30pm? I waited about 10 minutes looking for available cabs to no avail. Again i appeared to be the only Anglo face around.
But a guardian angel came to my rescue in the form of a Thai lady who spoke a bit of broken English. I told her my predicament and she said she'd help me catch a cab. She was waiting for a cab too, but she said she'd put me in one first since she could tell i was pretty clueless. She jokingly said she was the 'Tourist Police' by which i think she meant she was happy to help a hapless tourist like me.
We had to wait a while longer but eventually we managed to hail a cab, she put me in it and spoke to the driver, explaining to him where i wanted to go. She had nothing to gain and it meant she had to wait longer for her trip home. I've always relied on the kindness of strangers.
Today i'm planning to do some wandering round Bangkok with my sister and her hubby Mark (who i eventually met up with at my hotel at around midnight). And this evening i'm flying off to Ko Samui. So excited :)
