Independent Sex and Music Film

A while back you might remember me posting about the banning of the new Michael Winterbottom film 9 Songs. Thankfully the appeals process was succesful and the film will now be released in Australia with an R18+ classification.

After writing earlier about the film a little birdy gave me a DVD preview copy of the film. It's a worthwhile film, but not great. It doesn't really have a lot of heart, you don't really get to know the characters outside of the bedroom. All you really see of them is when they go to a rock show or when they're having sex. But that seems to be the point, exploring the sexual side of a relationship and not much inbetween, the inverse to what you usually get in a film about a relationship.

If you're in Sydney you might like to attend a screening of the film which will be followed by a phone interview with Michael Winterbottom. It's on April 13th at 7.30pm at The Valhalla.

Yeah I heard the film was pretty lame. But it's good to see the OFLC finally keeping in tune with the majority of Australians.

Raph:

I really enjoyed the film Dan. It reminded me of our gig-going days (apart from the sex!) before I came to this godless town on the other side of the world. Although the sound recording wasn't great in the concert sequences, it made me feel like I was back in a place that cared about rock n roll. Winterbottom has great taste in music.

nice shot boud. reminds me on wimbeldon...but geez kirsten dunst looks somewhat different

9 songs sucks big time! It's just some footage strung together with no real purpose. If Winterbottom was exploring the sexual side of a relationship the film would have looked more realistic. Maybe that's why a digital camera was used to give it a more home movie look in the first place. Even then the movie doesn't work. I must say I love sex in movies. In fact I am a self-confessed sex addict but this movie bored me no end. I would have walked out of it if not for the sex scenes. There's a purpose for putting the penetration scene at the end... so that audience stays till the end of the movie. Very smart indeed. If you are interested in art movies there are plenty of others out there like Romance, A Ma Soeur, Y Tu Mama Tambien and Anatomy of Hell which have plenty of sex but is quite interesting to watch too. Has anybody seen Oldboy? That movie totally rocked. No sex in it, though hehe. Amores Perros is another good one. I also recommend all the Pedro Almodovar movies. I reckon some Aussie movies are good too. Romper Stomper, Boys, Head On... umm can't remember what else I have seen. I used to study in Australia and was exposed to Aussie movies then. I like ONCE WERE WARRIORS too but that's KIWI, innit? :)
