My computer is dead to me

After a painful deterioration over several months my Powerbook has officially gone the way of all flesh. The hard drive has failed, it won’t boot, i can’t recover any data, i can’t even reinstall the system.

Luckily i did a fairly thorough backup a couple of weeks ago. I’ve lost all the photos i took in that time but thankfully i think most of my work is backed up.

What i’m least looking forward to is handing my computer over to Apple while they diagnose and fix the problem. Who knows how long that’ll take. I’m having withdrawal symptoms already.

Dan does the hard disk even work? I have some experience with hard disk cloning and data recovery.

I think it’s dead. You can boot mac computers in Firewire disc mode, where it acts just like a firewire hard drive. I did this and plugged it into another machine and it didn’t recognise a disc at all.
I also tried to boot using DiscWarrior and it just crashed.
Me thinks serious hardware failure. It’s with the Mac people now.

Hope it works out for you, Dan… I’d be lost without my slightly crusty old Powerbook.

That’s so random. I had a nightmare the other day that the same thing happened to me. I actually physically woke up and went and hugged my computer, touching wood en route.
    Still under warranty?
