I had a bunch of fun on Sunday afternoon photographing equine Sydney band The Mares. It was the second time i’ve taken shots in a proper photo studio, and the first time i’ve ever been paid for taking photos.
Taking the shots was a piece of piss really. The guys were perfect subjects, they knew how to pose, took direction well, had creative ideas of their own and approached it with the required sense of fun.
We did straight up serious like shots like this:

Some portraits like this:

Then some fun quirky ones like these:

Many thanks are owed to Cybele who helped immeasurably and supplied the studio (Blue Murder Studios – they rock).
Have a look at Flickr for more shots from the shoot.
Hey, they’re great photos Dan!
The studios look funky… and you got to play in a cyclorama – I’m jealous! :]
and the first time i’ve ever been paid for taking photos.
That’s a long overdue eventuality man.
Nice work!
impressive stuff.
what kind of kit did you end up using for the shoot?
I was going to use my Canon EOS 350D but it wouldn’t work with the flash trigger at the studio. I ended up borrowing a Fuji S2 Pro, which took some getting used to. The interface on the Canon cameras is a lot more intuitive than others IMHO.
There was two lights, one with a big softbox on it, and another from the side with a honeycomb filter. The lighting setup was thanks to Cybele.
I wanted them to just be bathed in light so they could do whatever and i didn’t need to adjust the lighting at all as we worked.
nice work, thanks for the additional info.
Yes! I saw them already and ‘favourited’ a couple. Had to resist from doing the whole set.
“The guys were perfect subjects, they knew how to pose”
I was thinking the same thing as I was looking at the photos: That they certainly aren’t camera shy. Looks like it was fun.
nice shots!
Nicely done. And I agree, it was only a matter of time before someone paid you for your awesome pics.
I quite like the last one, with the rope.
Aha – so those studio photographers are just plain lazyz! Just as I always suspected…
