Mummies

I’m on the train right now en route to Brighton. Jeremy Keith has kindly offered to put me up while i explore the seaside town. I’ve been before but all i really remember is the pebbly beach and the tumbledown pier.

Yesterday i had a rather fruitful visit to the British Museum. Ayesha works there in the coins and medals department and another friend works in the Egypt department so i got a tour behind the scenes. I was taken to their storage area for Egyptian artifacts and saw rows of shelves stacked with mummies, tombs, sculpture and all manner of ancient things.

I had a peek inside a little coffin which contained an embalmed child, thousands of years old. It still had a bit of a pong about it. All this stuff isn’t accesible to the public, it’s their booty collected from Egypt and just kept in storage. Rather exciting to be able to explore it, even for someone fairly ignorant of Egyptology.
