Here’s a range of acts that are touring Sydney soon that i’m excited about:
Big Day Out – across Australia and NZ starting next week.
Well der. Iggy Pop, The White Stripes, Franz Ferdinand, Kings of Leon, The Mars Volta… Need i say more? Most acts are doing side shows too.
Modular Big Day Out after party – The Basement, 10pm 26th January
I don’t know about the official after party – but this ought to be better.
Tix only available on the door. I hear rumours of a Franz Ferdinand appearance…
Deerhoof and Calvin Johnson – Glebe Town Hall, 15th Feb
People rave about Deerhoof, i’m sure they’re good, but i’m just curious to see the venue. UPDATE: PopFrenzy just updated their website to remove reference to Deerhoof for this show and replaced it with “Special Guests”. Not sure what that means. They’re doing their own show at Spectrum either way.
Diplo – Mandarin Club, 18th Feb
The so-hot-right-now DJ/producer/remixer type. I’ve no idea how you’d classify his music style. Listen to his remix of Kanye West’s Golddigger for an idea.
Les Savy Fav – The Gaelic Club, 25th Feb
Best frontman in rock. Best Sydney gig of 2005. They’re also playing with critical darlings The Hold Steady and Thunderbirds Are Now! You must see this lest your friends berate you for months after saying how awesome it was.
Jens Lekman – playing on a boat on Sydney Harbour for PopFrenzy March 4th
This swedish crooner will make you go weak in the knees. If he doesn’t the views of Sydney harbour will. Or sea sickness. I saw him last year and loved it.
St Jerome’s Laneway Festival – Sydney City, 5th March
Lots of good bands take over the streets of Sydney
U2 – March
I pretend to be all cool with my indie rock gigs, but i’m a big daggy U2 fan at heart. I’ve seen them previously in Sydney, London, Dublin and New York. You could say i kinda like these guys. All shows are sold out but beg borrow or steal to get to this.
Well there ya go – lots of live music to get excited about. And that’s just the international stuff, no doubt there’ll be plenty of local acts to knock your socks off too.
I’ll most likely be at at least 4 of these.
You shooting the BDO for JJJ, Dan?
Deerhoof are ok, some of their songs are awesome, but a lot are wierd for wierdness’ sake, like the song that goes “Panda panda panda panda pan panda,
Panda panda panda panda pan panda,
Panda panda panda panda pan panda etc”
Aaron, the one Deerhoof song i’ve heard didn’t exactly sell me on them. But i’m still open minded about em. And i’m keen to check out Glebe Town Hall as a venue, i’ve never heard of gigs being on there and it’s round the corner from my house.
Amanda, i’m shooting the BDO for a humble little publication called SPIN magazine. So excited.
thanks man, that diplo track is so-hot-right-now.
I just got Oh You’re So Silent Jens and ‘Sky Phenomenen’ is ringing so true right now (I won’t mention her name in case she’s reading this). He’s playing at the Northcote Social Club here in Melbourne so I might check him out but it wouldn’t be as awesome as the Sydney Harbour boat gig. That will be something truely special.
My new year’s resolution to save my mulla has just gone out the window!……..but I got tix to BDO and U2 last year, so that doesn’t count right
I read somewhere that the Franz were going to check out Melbourne while they were here.
Apparently they liked the cakes on Ackland St.
you have to see the cribs 3/2/06 at the Annandale Hotel
saw them a few weeks ago here in london and they are nothing short of mental…
some pics from the show here –> cribs pics
Good advice mic, i’m definitely keen on that show.
sorry to be pedantic boud (well, not really sorry) but the LSF harbour cruise was in 2004 (not 2005).
wow, I’m doing well considering the state my head’s in after the free booze last night!
Geeze louise, 2004! How time flies.
Apparently it’s no longer Deerhoof at glebe town hall but the crayon fields instead
but don’t hold me to that
double result
1) St Jeromes Laneway Festival
2) just so happens that i will be back in oz at this time
line up for this festival is immense
broken social scene/pretty girls make graves/les savy fav/avalanchers
omg – does anyone know if there are tickets still available for this???
I’m pressing repeat on the Fabric Live 24: Diplo at the moment.
Best mix album I’ve heard for sometime.
Fabric Live is probably the best series and this is one of the best in the series. Good friggin choice!
