Several weekends ago i spent a nice afternoon with Brendan Wixted, aka The Model School, taking some snapshots for his press materials.
The previous night i went to see him and his band play to a packed Hopetoun Hotel for the launch of his album. He’s got an Elliot Smith meets Eels sorta vibe. Have a listen to The Model School on myspace.
For the photos we wandered Surry Hills for a bit, then headed over to the inner west to a colurful wall Brendan liked the look of.
After the natural light street shots we did a few more with some lights set up in his lounge room.
I set up a light behind him to emphasise that great mop of hair. Brendan liked the idea of a weird prop so he hugged a golden photo frame he had laying around.
The Model School will be supporting Bluebottle Kiss and Pivot, this Saturday night at Manning Bar.
I LOVE these portraits!!!! The lighting is superb! My faves are the one in front of the mural on the wall and the very last one-I like how you get just a portion of his hand and the way that the hair is lit
oooh, i love the portraits.. and thats a rad photo frame to be just laying around
Very nice! Were those back light ones done with a professional studio light or just a basic lamp?
They were small 200 watt studio lights i borrowed from Cybele.
These are really good Dan. I like the backlit hairdo! Very cool.
Where’s that colourful wall?
Is it ‘Pigeon Ground’at Camperdown?
Got it in one
woo hoo!
Trainspotter!
It even looks reminiscent of the cover of Elliott Smith’s ‘Figure 8′ album.
Nice.
Looking forward to catching his set at Manning. I like what I’ve heard so far.
a friend of his asked me to take these a few months ago and i freaked out and said no, glad i did!
I think the word spread far and wide that he wanted shots. Cybele was asked by someone else, and he even got a quote from Tony Mott!
Fab once again Dan. Love your use of colour n texture
