Shooting beer
Shooting products is not something i particularly enjoy, but i have to do it a lot for work and this week was no exception. We reviewed over 50 different beers and i had to shoot each of them.
It's harder than it looks and it took some experimenting before i settled on a setup i liked.
I thought some people might be curious to see behind the scenes. Click on the photo for the notes on Flickr.

Time Out Sydney Style Council
Elizabeth Ann MacGregor, director of the MCA in Sydney.
For last weeks issue of Time Out Sydney we assembled a 'Style Council' of people to give us their take on what makes Sydney tick.
It was a fun feature to shoot, even if it was rather hectic pinning these people down.
Philip Cox, founder of the COX architecture firm in his office on Clarence St.
Liane Rossler, founder of Dinosaur Designs, in her office in Surry Hills.
The Wu clan, one part PopFrenzy, two parts Incu.
Dan Single and George Gorrow of Ksubi in their Surry Hills HQ.
Stephen Pavlovic aka Pav, founder and top dog at Modular Records.
Tanya Stevanovic, owner of Pretty Dog, the renowned clothing boutique in Newtown.
Jess Scully, editor of Summer Winter and Empty magazines and all round over achiever.
Cybele was also in the feature, but fittingly she took her own portrait.

Catcall, HOOPS, S.Y.L.K and Ms Fitz
For some time i've been noticing a movement in Sydney of hip-hop and 90's R&B influenced girl crews making a bit of a scene for themselves. DJ's and MC's who love dressing up in an over the top style, performing and throwing parties.
It's a 'sisters are doing it for themselves' type attitude. I imagine the girls growing up on acts like Salt-n-Pepa and Madonna and now they're living out their childhood fantasies of dressing up and singing and dancing on stage with their friends.
At this stage it's a pretty street level movement, not cracking the mainstream, and the acts that typify it for me are Catcall, the HOOPS DJ's and S.Y.L.K.
So when i heard Time Out was planning an issue based on the broad theme of 'style' i thought it was the perfect opportunity to bring these acts together and document it in a photoshoot.
Several emails later and we were all together in a dance studio taking pictures. I also invited stylist and sometime Catcall backup singer/dancer Ms Fitz (not this Ms Fits) to be a part of it as she embodies the mashed up fashion style and attitude.
The photos and article are now running across a double page spread in the current issue of Time Out Sydney.
It's testament to the pretty sweet nature of my job that although i'm just the photographer, i can initiate and produce a feature of my own and get it in the mag.

Cybele's gallery show opening
Remember when i rated Cybele Malinowski as one of the top young Australian music photographers? Well now she's exhibiting her wares in her first gallery exhibition titled LOUDlight. All the photos on display are in huge backlit displays like the one above featuring Catcall.
It opens this Thursday from 6.30pm at the MTV gallery (4-16 Yurong St, East Sydney). Marieke and The Doctor will open proceedings and Dappled Dave will be performing with his new band Curse of Company featuring Sarah from redsunband and Danny Heifetz, ex-drummer for Mr Bungle.
The exhibition continues till the 30th April - open Wednesday to Saturday between 1 and 6pm.

V Festival Sydney 2008
Here's my photos from the V Festival in Sydney last weekend.
It's quite a civilised festival as far as these things go. Not overcrowded, just three stages, not too many timetable clashes, great setting, good bands and a mix of young and old punters.
I was a Smashing Pumpkins fan back in the day, first seeing them at the Hordern Pavilion circa 1996. So it was a nostalgic rush to hear them open their set with the chiming guitar intro to Today.
It's a pity anything Pumpkins post '96 doesn't interest me at all. Even if they will throw an attractive new bassist.
Róisín Murphy was notable for her mid set costume changes and attractive backup singers.
Robyn and her crazed dancing were fun to shoot.
Modest Mouse were playing but all eyes and lenses seemed to be trained on their ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr.
Glass Candy were a wild card for me and were quite fun. A languid lead singer and a baseball cap toting synth player.
I'm sure The Jesus and Mary Chain pleased their fans, i'm embarrasingly ignorant of the cult band.
This was the crowd for Cut Copy - who deserved to be in high spirits after news filtered through their new album debuted at number one on the charts.
CSS were lots of fun - but the sound mix was shocking and had the crowd chanting "turn it up!".

About Boudist
I started Boudist in 2003, not knowing what it would become. I still don't.
It's primarily a place for me to share photos i've taken and links that i find interesting. It evolves as i do.
In 2003 i was a web designer with a passing interest in photography. In the intervening years that interest has grown into a full blown obsession and a full-time photography career.
My day job is Chief Photographer for Time Out Sydney. While i post photos i take for work, this site isn't endorsed or affiliated with Time Out.
I live in Surry Hills, Sydney, Australia.
I look like the guy in these photos.
My photography
I love taking pictures. I've been doing it since i was a kid but it's not something i took seriously until i bought my first digital camera. That was just a simple Canon Ixus V, but i used it almost every day, snapping ordinary things in my life.
I love seeing live music so would take my camera along and shoot pictures from the crowd.
I upgraded to a Canon 350D in March 2005 on a trip to Austin for SXSW. I wangled myself a media pass and shot dozens of gigs. SPIN and Rolling Stone magazine found some of my SXSW photos online and asked to publish them.
I've since been published again in SPIN and Rolling Stone plus other press including NME, Vanity Fair, The Sydney Morning Herald, Dazed and Confused, Nylon and dozens more. I used to work a lot for Drum Media and Mess and Noise.
I sometimes syndicate my photos through Retna and Photoshelter.
I've got a BA (Media and Communication) but no formal training in photography besides a short course in lighting from ACP.
I owe a lot of people a great deal of gratitude for the help and faith they've had in me.
My photography gear
The most common question i get asked is "what camera do you use?" I don't think it matters a great deal, but if you're curious, this is what i use.
- Canon 5D
- Canon 350D (retired)
- Tamron 14mm f2.8
- Tamron 17-35mm f2.8
- Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 (retired)
