An afternoon with Carmen

Sad news today that Sydney (via New Zealand) transgender icon Carmen Rupe passed away aged 75. I met her several times over the years while photographing for Time Out. The most memorable was an afternoon i spent with her and writer Angus Fontaine in her small Surry Hills apartment. She spoke at length about her [...]
Triple j’s Nick Cave tribute

Triple j’s Nick Cave tribute show, dubbed Straight To You, rolled through Sydney’s Enmore theatre last week and i dropped by to take some pictures and catch up with old pals.
Who We Are wins an ASTRA Award

Last week a documentary series i worked on called Who We Are won an ASTRA Award for Most Outstanding Documentary. It’s a series of short profiles of seven indigenous Australian artists and is highly deserving of its acclaim. Much credit is due to creator and director Dei El-Ayoubi as well as DOP Tony Luu for [...]
VIVID Live photos

It’s been almost a week since it wrapped up but i’ve just found a moment to come up for air to blog some Vivid Live photos. I was shooting for the Sydney Opera House and some days felt like i had the best job in the world. Going to work each night at the magnificently [...]
Sydney Writer’s Festival photos

I’m more known for photographing festivals of the musical variety so it was somewhat of a change of pace shooting Sydney Writer’s Festival the other week. It was a very civilised affair, meandering between the wharves at Walsh Bay, enjoying superb Sydney sunshine and listening to snippets of writer’s discuss their work.
Backstage at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week

Last week i photographed behind the scenes at a number of Rosemount Australian Fashion Week shows for Little Hero PR. It’s a pretty fun gig, shooting models and hanging out with photographer buddies. A lot of my brief was shooting sponsorship stuff but i snapped some frames for my own interest in between. I made [...]
Laneway Festival 2011

Last weekend I wrapped up one of the best photo assignments i’ve ever had as official photographer for the Laneway Festival. I’ve shot Laneway every year in Sydney since its first time there in 2006 and i think it’s the best festival in Australia, and I don’t just say that because they have the good [...]
U2 turn Sydney Red

My buddy Elmo and I have been long time U2 fans, so when we heard Bono was in town to launch World Aids Day ahead of their Australian tour we scoured our media contacts to get access. Turns out it wasn’t that hard, and with a scrum of TV crews, radio people, photographers and journalists [...]
Temper Trap, Tinie Tempah and getting paid

Here’s some pictures from Temper Trap’s Russian Standard Live at the Chapel performance last night, followed by Tinie Tempah at the Blackberry Torch launch last week. These were shows i shot for the sponsors and it got me thinking about shooting live music and my changed relationship with shooting shows.
Constantina Bush aka Kamahi Djordon King
These photos have been sitting on my hard drive for too long, it’s time they get an airing here. I present to you Kamahi Djordan King and his flamboyant alter ego Constantina Bush. They were shot in June last year while i was taking stills on Who We Are, a Foxtel series of short profiles [...]
Backstage at Fashion Week for Harper’s Bazaar

Australian Fashion Week seems like an eternity ago now, but here’s some photos that have just gone to print. They’re behind-the-scenes photos at fashion label Little Joe‘s runway show, run in a Lancôme sponsored double page spread in Harper’s Bazaar.
Vivid 2010 recap
After posting some other photos of Vivid Sydney events like the lighting of the Opera House sails, Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson’s press conference, the concert for dogs, and Creative Sydney, here’s some other photos from my time shooting Vivid Live for the Opera House.
Creative Sydney 2010
Here’s some of my photos of Creative Sydney at the MCA over the past week and a bit. I dropped in several times to catch the various presentations, panels, performances and parties. It was loads of fun and an excellent way to bring Sydney’s disparate creative communities together. I was photographing for Creative Sydney.
Music for Dogs

One of the most odd but enjoyable events of Vivid Sydney so far was Saturday’s Music for Dogs concert by Laurie Anderson. It was a free performance by Laurie and three musicians designed especially for dogs on the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House.
TEDx Sydney

I spent Saturday at TEDx Sydney, snapping some pictures for the venue, CarriageWorks. You’ve probably seen videos from the TED conference in the US before. It’s been running since 1984 and is a conference dedicated to ‘ideas worth spreading’ which attracts an amazingly talented array of speakers who have up to 18 minutes to address [...]
Ksubi : RAFW 2010

Ksubi held their 10th anniversary Fashion Week show at the cavernous Royal Hall of Industries. Ksubi almost imploded in bankruptcy last year, and they jokingly mock themselves as has beens, but this big brashy show seemed to be sending a message that they’re here to stay.
Romance Was Born : RAFW 2010

Romance Was Born was, as has become the norm, the most memorable and spectacular of the shows i saw at Fashion Week. It was held in MacLaurin Hall in Sydney University which was decked out in the theme for the show – ‘Renaissance Dinosaur’. So much attention to detail and creativity gone wild.
Therese Rawsthorne : RAFW 2010

Here’s some photos from behind the scenes of Therese Rawsthorne‘s show at Australian Technology Park for Fashion Week.
Friedrich Gray : RAFW 2010

Photos from backstage at Friedrich Gray‘s Australian Fashion Week show. Friedrich Gray was the first ever fashion show i photographed. It was in 2007 at The Kirk, a church in Surry Hills and i was snapping for the now defunct Australian edition of Dazed and Confused. I’ve shot each of his fashion week shows since, [...]
Stolen Girlfriends Club : RAFW 2010

The Stolen Girlfriends Club show was in a big warehouse in Alexandria.
