A photo tribute to Surry Hills

A photo tribute to Surry Hills

To coincide with the Surry Hills themed issue of Time Out Sydney, the magazine held a one night only photo exhibition at Urban Uprising featuring 20 of my pictures, plus some more by Will Storr.
The pictures are all of Surry Hills people and places, some taken on assignment for Time Out, some just my personal [...]

Sydney Festival 2010

Sydney Festival 2010

I love Sydney in January. There’s that post-holiday glow that still remains, the exceptional beach weather (between torrential downpours), and then there’s the festivals and gigs.
One of the great pleasures of my job is getting to photograph those festivals, the biggest and most diverse of which is Sydney Festival. I love it because i see [...]

Miss Pole Dance Australia 2010

Miss Pole Dance Australia 2010

Back in October i took some pictures at Miss Pole Dance Australia 2010 at the Enmore Theatre.
I spent most of my time backstage.

While i’m at it, here’s some photos from last year’s competition.

Here’s some video of this year’s competition.

Sydney Dance Company promo video

Sydney Dance Company promo video

Back in August i had a dream gig shooting stills on the set of a promo video for Sydney Dance Company.

The one minute piece was shot with six dancers from the Sydney Dance Company, choreographed by Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela.
It was all filmed in the Deutsche Bank building in Sydney’s CBD.

Credit is due [...]

Breakfast on the Bridge

Breakfast on the Bridge

6000 Sydneysiders walked onto a grass covered Sydney Harbour Bridge yesterday morning for the first ever Breakfast on the Bridge.
Real grass turf was rolled out from pylon to pylon to cover the length of the bridge and provide a soft spot to picnic.
The grass, the people, the cows and lack of cars made for a [...]

Sydney’s Apocalyptic Red Dawn

Sydney's Apocalyptic Red Dawn

Like all Sydneysiders i awoke this morning to the most intense red glow beaming into my bedroom window.

A quick look out the window then a look online confirmed that a dust storm of epic proportions had enveloped Sydney.

While the comfort of bed tempted me, the photographer in me decided to head out the door and [...]

Dappled Cities launch Zounds

Dappled Cities launch Zounds

On Tuesday night Dappled Cities hosted a listening party with a difference for their new album Zounds.
Held at Kennards Self Storage in Waterloo, Dappled commissioned 12 artists to decorate 12 different storage rooms in whatever fashion they wished.
Each room featured a soundtrack of a particular song from the album on repeat.
Definitely one of the most [...]

Performances at Sydney Theatre

Performances at Sydney Theatre

Here’s some photos from performances i’ve shot at Sydney Theatre in the past couple of months.
Shooting this sort of thing is a refreshing way to use the skills i’ve learned from concert photography for other sorts of performance.
Shooting dance is especially rewarding, freezing those split second moments that pass too quick for the human eye.
[...]

Sydney Songs closes Creative Sydney

Sydney Songs closes Creative Sydney

The three week run of Creative Sydney came to an end on Friday night with a performance of Sydney Songs at the Museum of Contemporary Art.
Many Sydney muso’s performed songs about Sydney backed by the Alan Dale Allstars, lead by Lindsay McDougal.
Creative Sydney was a fantastic initiative, focusing attention on the often unacknowledged or unknown [...]

Brian Eno launches Luminous

Brian Eno launches Luminous

This morning Brian Eno launched his music festival Luminous with a press conference at the Sydney Opera House.
As well as curating the music, he’s got an artwork on display in the Studio at the Opera House called 77 Million Paintings.
Starting at 6pm tonight his artwork will also be projected onto the sails of the Sydney [...]

Smart Light Sydney

Smart Light Sydney

There’s a festival of events starting in Sydney this week called Vivid Sydney.
It includes:

Luminous, a music festival curated by Brian Eno
Fire Water, a firey spectacle on Sydney Harbour
Creative Sydney, a series of workshops and performances from the creative industries
Smart Light Sydney, a series of light installations around Circular Quay and The Rocks

It’s a bit like [...]

Romance Was Born : RAFW 2009

Romance Was Born : RAFW 2009

The last of my fashion week posts is from the spectacular Romance Was Born show at The Wharf Restaurant on Sydney Harbour. As with previous shows from the designers it was extravagant, theatrical, kitsch and featured my old neighbour Pauly.
There was an aquatic theme going on, with shells, sea creatures, scales, coral, sea captains and [...]

ANT!PODiUM : RAFW 2009

ANT!PODiUM : RAFW 2009

Here’s some backstage shots of the ANT!PODiUM show at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week.

It was quite a ‘punk’ show with men in womenswear, rodent accessories and jewellery crafted from tampons.

Therese Rawsthorne : RAFW 2009

Therese Rawsthorne : RAFW 2009

Next up from Fashion Week was Therese Rawsthorne who held her show on site at the Overseas Passenger Terminal.

Her show featured the model who seemed to be the “it girl” of the week, Myf Shepherd.

Friedrich Gray : RAFW 2009

Friedrich Gray : RAFW 2009

During Rosemount Australian Fashion Week i had the privilege of photographing a number of shows backstage for fashion PR firm Little Hero. They represent the cream of exciting young designers including Friedrich Gray, ANT!PODiUM, Therese Rawsthorne and Romance Was Born.
These photos are from the Friedrich Gray show, a sydney label designed by Ben Pollitt. The [...]

Popfrenzy Afloat 2009

Popfrenzy Afloat 2009

Last Sunday eve was spent aboard a boat pottering around Sydney harbour. It was playing host to Popfrenzy afloat, with performances from Traps, Spod, Matt and Kim and The Meanies.

The Scare have No Money

The Scare have No Money

A few weeks ago i dropped in on The Scare and the gents from The Grindhouse while they were filming the clip for No Money.

The performance was filmed in a Redfern studio and interspersed with footage the band took on a night on the town.

No Money (downloadable for free) is taken from their Daniel [...]

Mardi Gras 2009

My Saturday evening was spent photographing Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

It was the first time i’d photographed the parade as an accredited photographer. Previously i’d been as a spectator, toting a milk crate to get a decent view. So it was quite a privelege being able to wander up and down the parade [...]

Sydney Festival 2009 in photos

A month late, but here’s the final lot of my photos from Sydney Festival.

First up is Festival First Night, featuring Grace Jones, Santogold (before she became Santigold) and Busy P DJing plus loads more i didn’t see. It’s always one of the highlights of the festival; it’s free and takes over the city with [...]

Fall Out Boy on a warship

I had a pretty fun gig yesterday, shooting Fall Out Boy play onboard HMAS Tobruk for Xbox Sounds.
It was a pretty spectacular and unique location for a concert, on the deck of a Navy warship docked at Garden Island in Sydney Harbour.
Pete Wentz and the other chaps put on an entertaining show for the [...]

Pride? Patriotism? Jingoism? Racism?

A few snaps of tats, piercings and t-shirts at the Sydney Big Day Out.

Postscript

I saw this happy family down at Bondi and thought they made a nice addition to the collection of flag wavers.

Star Wars Unwrapped

The other week i photographed the installation of the Star Wars exhibit at the Powerhouse Museum.
Along with the costumes and props from the film, they flew in a team of American curators to install the exhibit.

It was a pretty strange sight seeing the menacing figure of Darth Vader unceremoniously taken out of his plastic wrapping [...]

Miss Pole Dance 2008

A few weeks ago i had the pleasure of spending some time backstage at Miss Pole Dance Australia 2008.

Evidently pole dancing isn’t the sleazy underground pursuit it once was, with this event held at the 2000 capacity Enmore Theatre with most of the audience made up of women.

Behind the scenes it was relatively calm; lots [...]

Sparkadia’s homecoming

My old chums Sparkadia headlined a packed Gaelic Theatre on Saturday night. It was good to see them back home after touring Europe and playing festival dates at Glastonbury and T in the Park.
Like i did previously with Expatriate, i snapped a few pictures of Sparkadia backstage, nervously anticipating going on stage to [...]
