The October issue of Time Out Sydney is a bit of a teaser for the Bar Awards and Bar Guide which are held and released next week.

It meant some bar hopping for me as i snapped bartenders who are up for awards.

First up was cover stars Anton and Jason from Shady Pines. I set up a paper roll in the bar for the cover.

After the cover, all the Shady Pines bar staff assembled for a group shot which nicely ran over a double page spread.

The week of these shoots i’d bought a new Octobox from B&H which proved useful for these run and gun bartender portraits. I’d just turn up, pop my Canon 580ex flash inside the Octobox and snap a few frames of the bartenders. Easy as, fast and portable.

Time Out Burger Wars issue photos

For the June issue of Time Out Sydney they staged a burger showdown, where six of Sydney’s top chefs prepared their burger for a blind taste test from a panel of six restaurant critics.

It was hosted at Rockpool Bar and Grill and i set up a bit a mobile studio to shoot the chefs and their burgers in one of the private dining rooms.

As well as the burgers i got to sample some fine dining fare at the new Bécasse restaurant in the revamped Westfield in the city.

I also shot Menya Mappen in the city in a guerrilla style shoot.

When photographing for reviews i always call ahead to the restaurant asking to come in and take photos. It’s done separately to the writer, they remain anonymous and the restaurant doesn’t know they’re being reviewed till after it’s done and the first they read of it is in the magazine.

But when i asked to shoot Menya Mappen they said i couldn’t have permission to take photos unless they read the review and approved it first. That’s a big no no, so i just had to visit and photograph undercover. So like anyone i lined up for my food, ordered and ate while taking a few sneaky snapshots while no one was looking.

Time Out Food and Drink photos

It’s been a while since i’ve posted some of my food and drink photos that i’ve shot for Time Out Sydney so here’s a bit of an update from the past few issues.

Unlike previous times, i’m showing the actual page layouts, so you can see how the my photos are used in context of the magazine.

FBi Radio Still Life Art Auction

Tonight FBi Radio is holding an art auction at the Art Gallery of New South Wales to raise funds for the station.

They’ve assembled an a-list lineup of artists who’ve donated works that anyone can buy tonight.

For the poster they asked if i could photograph some fruit and veg with the word ‘Still Life’ carved out of it. An odd request, but i like to help FBi where i can.

We did the picture at youeni provides, a cafe and green grocer in Surry Hills. Chris Starke and the staff there skilfully did the carving alongside Nina from FBi.

The flyer was designed by Joshua Crowley.

Small Sydney Bars for Tiger Tales

It was more photographing of those small Sydney bars a few weeks ago shooting this story for Tiger Airways inflight magazine. It was my first job for them, so i was happy to get the cover and a seven page feature.

I spent a Saturday evening jumping between Sticky Bar, Pocket, The Falconer and Name This Bar. First photographing a portrait of the owners in the empty bar, then returning later in the night to capture the bar in full swing.

It’s been a while between food photo updates, so here’s a bit of a backlog of photos i’ve shot for Time Out Sydney recently.

This stuff makes up a large part of what i shoot for Time Out. I’d never photographed food or interiors before i started at the magazine, but it’s been almost three years now, so i’ve become more accustomed to it.

Tokonoma cut their own ice

Tokonoma, a bar in Surry Hills, has a nifty gimmick when it comes to the ice in some of their drinks. They keep a large block of ice behind the bar, and if you order one of their specialty shochu drinks, they’ll hack off a ball of ice to chill the drink.

Chairman Mao

It’s not all fine diners that i photograph. There’s the odd casual suburban gem – like Chairman Mao in Kensington. It specialises in Hunanese cuisine with the dining room decked out in kitsch Mao paraphernalia.

Bloodwood seems to have taken Newtown by storm. Ever since they opened the doors there’s been loads of buzz about the place.

Shady Pines Saloon in Surry Hills has proven so popular that on the several occasions i’ve tried to go back since i photographed it, i’ve been met with an enormous queue of people waiting to get in.

Sydney seems to be enjoying a bar renaissance of late. There’s intimate, character filled new bars popping up all the time. It’s a welcome revolt from the scourge of large generic sports/suit bars that characterised Sydney’s drinking scene.

Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day, and a lazy café breakfast is one of life’s great pleasures.

Sydney’s best coffee

I spent last week drinking lots of very good coffee while shooting Time Out‘s feature on Sydney’s best coffee.

The cover shot is a snap i took quickly by a window at Campos last year.

Bertoni in Balmain was baby central. In fact all of Balmain appeared overrun with newborns. The streets congested with strollers.

A nice free pour at Wall Cafe.

These gents on the terrace at Bill and Toni’s were classic. I asked if they minded if i shoot in their direction, and the fella with the moustache was more than happy, as long as i gave him a moment to spruce up his mo.

This is a close up of a ristretto from Single Origin. As close to pure, unadulterated coffee as you can get.

For the curious, Time Out Sydney voted Single Origin as the best coffee.
