Triple j’s Nick Cave tribute show, dubbed Straight To You, rolled through Sydney’s Enmore theatre last week and i dropped by to take some pictures and catch up with old pals.

Florence and the Machine

It was quite a joy photographing Florence and the Machine this evening in Sydney’s intimate York Theatre at the Seymour Centre.

It’s been some some between shooting live shows for me. It used to be all i did, and i’d do it several nights a week. But i’ve drifted from it. I’ve been put off by the late nights, the restrictions, the “no money” part of it, the silly contracts, and frankly the bands who all start to look the same after a while.

But Florence brought back the love. A stunning production with great lush and changing light, a dramatic performer who’s not afraid to emote, no contract and the camaraderie of my fellow photographers. We were restricted the the back of the room, but thankfully it was a relatively small venue and i got to shoot a few frames with the 400mm 2.8 lens (thanks Mark!).

Splendour Studio 2011

At Splendour in the Grass this year i teamed up again with FasterLouder for the Splendour Studio, where we set up a studio backstage to take pictures of the artists.

We had a broad theme this year of a Willy Wonka sugar high vibe. Lots of lollies and silly colourful outfits.

It was stupid amounts of fun.

The Grates for triple j magazine

I’ve had a few weeks off, getting married in Thailand and whatnot. But it’s time to hop back on the blogging wagon so here’s some clippings from a shoot i did before i left with The Grates for triple j magazine.

As soon as Patience did the yelling thing, gnashing her teeth, i knew it was a winner of a shot, and i also knew it was exactly the same face she pulled for Cybele on her Grates cover shot a few years back.

VIVID Live photos

It’s been almost a week since it wrapped up but i’ve just found a moment to come up for air to blog some Vivid Live photos.

I was shooting for the Sydney Opera House and some days felt like i had the best job in the world. Going to work each night at the magnificently adorned Sydney Opera House and seeing incredible shows. The Cure, Bat for Lashes, Odd Future, Cut Copy, Yo Gabba Gabba!, Azari & III…

More than previous years it felt like Vivid transformed the Opera House into a real party venue bringing in loads of punters who’d never normally set foot in the place.

To showcase the photos i put together a DPG powered photo website, much like i did for Laneway Festival. You can check out loads more photos there.

Last week a picture i took of Alex from Sparkadia graced the cover of Drum Media.

It’s great to work with Alex again, we’ve a long history as i’m pretty sure i took their first ever press shots back in 2005 when they were still called The Spark.

The picture they ran inside with the feature was fun for me to see, featuring my cat and assistant Stephanie. I always like to see lighting set-ups and revealing the artifice behind staged photos.

Rolling Stone Awards portraits

I have a few more photos in the current issue of Rolling Stone in a spread they did on coverage of the Rolling Stone Awards party. People were there for the awards and to get sozzled on the free tequila but i pulled people and award winners away for some portraits.

I had a little nook at the party where i set up some lights and a couple of backdrops, a red paper roll, some vintage wallpaper and a white wall.

The spreads in the magazine are a mix of the portraits i took and party shots another photographer did.

A double page spread in the April issue of Rolling Stone Australia

I had a couple of fun photo assignments published in the most recent issue of Rolling Stone, first up was some pictures with Gareth Liddiard and Dan Kelly who are soon to embark on a national tour together.

As is often the case it was a last minute shoot with no particular brief or vision in mind, but we decided we’d meet up at Clovelly beach and go from there. Fortune favoured us with overcast skies and a big empty blue swimming pool where we did nearly all the photos.

The double page opening shot is somewhat of a visual cliche for those head to head interview stories, but it works well on the page.

Getting two dudes up so close and personal is sometimes uncomfortable and often devolves into giggles as this out-take shows.
