While New York has a mass of quality music blogs, Australia seems fairly quiet on that front – or the blogs just aren’t very visible. So i’ve decided to assemble a list of blogs written by Australians, primarily about music.

Some host mp3s, some are news and reviews, some are better than others.

If you’ve any more to suggest leave a comment. Feel free to suggest your own site.

As a teenager i would take pleasure in reading my sister’s Girlfriend and Dolly magazines. At that impressionable age these mags are like your bible. They taught me all i needed to know about girls, for better or worse.

So while it’s exceedingly daggy to get a mention on a topic like blogging, i’m still quite chuffed.

I offered up some tips on blogging, they’re fairly commonsense, but are worth being reminded of.

  1. Write about something you’re passionate about; your enthusiasm will come through in the blog.
  2. Keep it fun! Blogging shouldn’t be hard work and you’ll be more inclined to update regularly if it doesn’t feel like a school assignment.
  3. Make your posts short and to the point; readers will get bored if your blog is full of wishy-washy rants.
  4. Update a few times a week. If you want readers to keep coming back, it’s good to regularly have new posts up.
  5. Take care with what you write – it may come back to haunt you.
  6. Engage with other bloggers; link to them and leave meaningful comments on their sites.

Holy crap, look who scored a double page spread in SPIN magazine!

It’s one of my shots from the Big Day Out. My crappy photo of the mag isn’t very good but here’s the original:

When i first heard i was getting a photo pass to the Big Day Out i was super excited but didn’t get my hopes up that anything would be published. SPIN only has two spots in the mag reserved for live photos that aren’t attached to editorial.

A couple of months ago when i heard they planned to run my photo i didn’t believe it. When my cheque arrived in the post i figured they’d made a mistake. But on Friday night, when i bought the latest issue (with Yeah Yeah Yeah’s on the cover) i couldn’t deny it any longer.

I’m stoked. It’s the most high profile photo i’ve had published to date, SPIN has around half a million circulation, which eclipses the reach of my blog somewhat :)

It’s daggy but i feel i owe some thanks to this blogging malarkey and to all the people who’ve encouraged me here and elsewhere. Cheers.
