Here’s my snaps from the Laneway Festival on the weekend. It was pretty exceptional; a fantastic line-up, a well mannered and good looking crowd, and a new more spacious venue in an ex-mental asylum.

Here’s my photos from the Homebake festival on Saturday.

Lovely day out as usual, and this year marked the fifth time i’ve photographed Homebake.

It was the first festival i ever photographed with proper accreditation. Thanks Sonia for sorting out that pass all those years ago.

Sydney Songs closes Creative Sydney

The three week run of Creative Sydney came to an end on Friday night with a performance of Sydney Songs at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Many Sydney muso’s performed songs about Sydney backed by the Alan Dale Allstars, lead by Lindsay McDougal.

The evening began with a panel discussion on the topic "The Future of Art and Technology" which included Nick Robertson who worked with Brian Eno on his 77 Million Paintings artwork

Creative Sydney was a fantastic initiative, focusing attention on the often unacknowledged or unknown creative communities in Sydney.

It was humbling for me to play some small part in it by appearing on their list of Creative Catalysts.

I look forward to seeing it happen again in 2010.

All Tomorrow’s Parties in Sydney

For years i’ve envied other cities around the world that hosted the All Tomorrows Parties festival. Created 10 years ago by an english chap named Barry Hogan he describes the festival as,

"…kind of like an anti-festival. We want to have drinks at reasonable prices, decent bands playing a lot of sets, free programs and brochures, no sponsorship. We don’t have a merch rate for bands, parking is free, we treat people with respect, as you’d like to be treated. You know who I’m talking about, those out there who like to milk it to people. The way forward is to keep it boutique.

But also we want to try to make the line-ups different than everything else. If you look at the line-ups of those summer festivals–good God, Jack Johnson! Who wants to see him? I don’t even think Jack Johnson wants to see himself. "

What also makes it different is that the line-up is curated by a band or particular artist. Fittingly Australia’s first All Tomorrow’s Parties had Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds choosing the bands and performing.

True to other versions of the festival, the Sydney venue wasn’t your typical festival location either – it was on Cockatoo island in the middle of Sydney Harbour. Pretty bloody special.

I wasn’t familiar with most of the artists on the bill, but that didn’t stop it being my favourite festival experience in years.

An amazing venue, lots of space, well organised, no long queues, Nick Cave and most importantly – no aggro drugged up shirtless munters!

Here’s hoping ATP becomes an annual fixture on the festival circuit.

Laneway Festival Sydney 2008

The rather splendid Laneway Festival rolled around again this weekend past. I was fresh off the plane from Thailand and flung forth into the throngs of indie kids partying in the heart of the city.

Some of the acts performing included Feist, The Presets, Bridezilla, Dan Deacon, Stars and Cool Kids.

Time Out “Sydney Songs” photo update

It’s Wednesday which means another issue of Time Out Sydney will be hitting Sydney news stands. This week’s magazine is a special Sydney Songs issue with a feature on the top 20 songs connected with Sydney.

The magazine cover is by the exceptionally talented Biddy of We Buy Your Kids. We also had covers designed by the similarly superb Katherine of Greedy Hen and James Bellesini of Love Police. Those covers can be seen across full pages inside the mag. The three designers are the cream of the crop talents working in the music biz, with their artwork gracing many of your favourite band’s tour posters and album artwork. It’s exciting to get such great people contributing.

There’s an invite only gig happening tonight (Wednesday) to celebrate the launch of the issue, with sets by Cloud Control and Wons Phreely. Email me if you want to go.

Bridezilla are featured amongst our top 5 bands to watch in 2008.

Actor Clarence John Ryan stars in the new Australian film September.

Naomi Kemmerer and Matt Noffs in what will soon house the ‘Street University’. It’s a project to support and educate marginalised young people in the Liverpool/Cabramatta area.

Actor Michael C. Hall channeling Dexter. It’s the best show on TV (or bittorrent…).

Scottish crime writer Ian Rankin was in town to promote the final book in his Inspector Rebus series.

Taiko drummer Tom Hampton of TaikOz.

Chef Neil Perry looking chuffed, as he might well be after a 6 out of 6 star review for his freshly revamped Rockpool (fish).
