I have a few more photos in the current issue of Rolling Stone in a spread they did on coverage of the Rolling Stone Awards party. People were there for the awards and to get sozzled on the free tequila but i pulled people and award winners away for some portraits.

I had a little nook at the party where i set up some lights and a couple of backdrops, a red paper roll, some vintage wallpaper and a white wall.

The spreads in the magazine are a mix of the portraits i took and party shots another photographer did.

I’m only about 3 months late with posting these pictures, but here’s some photos of day 1 and 2 of the SXSW Music Festival.

There was some great acts including Bloc Party, Amy Winehouse, The Presets, The Pipettes and plenty more.

Day 1 includes photos of The Young Knives, Yo Majesty, Razorlight, Pete Townshend, Children Collide, Expatriate, Mumm Ra, Macromantics, Lily Allen, Jamie T and more.

Day 2 includes photos of Youth Group, The Presets, The Pipettes, The Fratellis, The Dears, The Bravery, Bloc Party, Amy Winehouse and more.

If you consider that i saw just a tiny fraction of the bands who were playing on those days it gives you an idea of the breadth of acts on show at SXSW. Well over 1000 come to Austin for the four days.

As usual Airborne put on a great show to a packed out crowd. There were quite a few locals headbanging along – and Joel did his usual thing of jumping on the bar and playing his guitar along it.

I didn’t manage to catch Dallas Crane play but i did see them at an Aussie get together with free drinks.

This was Youth Group at a great open air venue on Cedar St. They’re quite popular over here and played a number of well received shows.

Josh Pyke was actually in a much better mood than this photo would suggest. He’d just found out his album had debuted at number 4 in the ARIA chart.

Children Collide played a great gig on the opening night.

I’d never seen Mink before but was impressed. They’ve got an ex INXS Rockstar contestant on vocals and he’s got all the rock moves down.

The Presets pulled a big crowd on the Beauty Bar patio. They seem to have a lot of local fans after a number of US tours.

My faves Expatriate played before Children Collide on the opening night at Red 7.

Here’s the first batch of my Homebake Festival photos.

There’s so many great Australian acts these days you’re spoilt for choice of things to see. Even the torrential downpour later in the day didn’t dampen spirits. But they did stop my photographing for a while.

In this set are shots of Young and Restless who scored their slot on the bill after their Unearthed win. At the other end of the spectrum is Hollywood actress Toni Collette, whose set began just as the skies opened.

I spent several hours on trains this weekend which gave me a chance to actually listen to some of the new music i accumulate.

I finally listened to the Dappled Cities Fly record which deserves the raves. And despite what some are saying, i think the new Bloc Party album is fabulous. I love Red Riders but somehow i didn’t find the album captured the joy i get from seeing their live show. The Teenager album is all cool and sleazy with the lush production you’d expect. It’s taken them a long time to get that record out, i first saw Teenager in July 2004 at The Hopetoun, supporting a pre-afro Wolfmother.

One little EP that particularly impressed is the new one from Children Collide, Glass Mountain Liars. You might call it grunge, it’s got a sound that reminds me of the 90′s bands i used to listen to. A little more uptempo though. Either way, it’s good. There’s a couple of tracks to download over at Sandwich Club.

On Friday and Saturday last week i dropped by The Hopetoun to check out the Reverberation Weekender and take some photos. It was a mini-festival of sorts, featuring artists that are distributed by Reverberation.

It was a good chance to see The Holy Soul play again, and the fellas from Children Collide.
