Another year another lovely Sydney Laneway Festival.

Tim Fite got along swimmingly with Patience and John from The Grates

Cut Off Your Hands played one of the best shows of the day. As usual lead singer Nick spent a fair bit of time amidst the crowd.

Jay Reatard was very entertaining. At one point Jay jumped off the stage mid-song and gestured that he wanted my camera. I gave it to him and he handed me his guitar. He couldn’t work my camera and i couldn’t play his guitar so it was somewhat of a FAIL. But fun and memorable nonetheless.

As expected Girltalk and his top 40 mashup music provoked controlled mayhem.

Cut Off Your Hands over Sydney

Playing a concert on a rooftop is one of the great rock’n'roll traditions. Pioneered by The Beatles, emulated by U2, and last night continued by Cut Off Your Hands.

Playing on the roof of the AM Eyewear office building in Darlinghurst it was a farewell gig of sorts for their guitarist Mikey Ramirez. It was his last ever performance with the band before retiring to quiet married life in Auckland.

The band aren’t letting up though, starting late February they’re embarking on a North American tour playing loads of shows with Ra Ra Riot and Passion Pit.

Cut Off Your Hands and teenagersintokyo

In my new tradition of posting photos weeks after they actually happened here’s shots of Cut Off Your Hands and Teenagers in Tokyo (or teenagersintokyo) at Spectrum in Sydney earlier this month.

I’d seen Teenagers in Tokyo play ages ago and they’ve definitely improved with more confidence on stage plus extra songs to rival the rather excellent End it Tonight.

You’ll know i’m already a big fan of Cut Off Your Hands and they impressed as usual.

The well traveled band is now back off to the UK, playing 14 dates there before going to New York for several CMJ shows then on to Iceland for the Airwaves festival.

Levity Records launch

This evening was the launch of the Levi’s Jeans sponsored record label Levity. The first and so far only signing, Kiwi band Cut Off Your Hands played at the event held at the National Art School.

It’s an interesting marketing and music business initiative. Levi’s paid for the recording of Cut Off Your Hands new EP, Blue on Blue. It was recorded in London with Bernard Butler producing, something that would have been nigh on impossible without the financial backing of Levi’s.

The band still own the recording and in return appear in some Levi’s advertising and have the EP released on the Levity label. The band get some very handy financial assistance and publicity and Levi’s improve their brand with a reputation as a grass roots music supporter.

With the music industry in decline we’re bound to see more initiatives like this.

Jerry over at Who The Hell wrote more about it and has a stream of one of the songs off the new EP.

Levi’s are on to a good thing with Cut Off Your Hands. They’re a great band, write catchy upbeat tunes, look good and are one of the hardest working bands around.

They played SXSW and a bunch of shows in the US, they then went to the UK and did another round of shows and recorded. They came back to Australia and just finished a tour with Young and Restless. Next they do a 17 date tour of New Zealand, playing the major cities and every sleepy holiday town in between. They’re then back to Australia on tour with Teenagers in Tokyo in August. Then probably again in December. It makes me tired just thinking about it.

I love New York so much. Every time i visit i have the most awesome time and meet so many great people. One of these days i’ll get off my arse and move over there.

After the R&R of Vegas New York was back to more partying. Lots of late nights and lock ins.

Now i promise no more travel pics from months past. That puts an end to posts about my American adventure.

Cut Off Your Hands in New York

No it’s not the name of a horror film, Cut Off Your Hands are band from New Zealand who i hung out with in New York.

I first met them by chance over take away pizza late one night in Austin.

I didn’t manage to catch them play at SXSW amongst the myriad of other things to see and do.

On my first day in New York i kept spotting so many great photo opportunities for band photos, so i was itching to do something. All the Australian bands i knew had already left town, so when i heard Cut Off Your Hands were playing at Pianos i ventured over with my pal Grace.

Sure enough, they needed little coaxing when i offered to take some pictures of them the next day.

The plan was to meet at MOMA at 5 and go from there, but due to numerous stuff ups we didn’t end up meeting till 7. By that time it was dark and they had less than an hour until they needed to be at Piano’s for another gig.

Necessity being the mother of invention i took them to Times Square, the only place i could think of with enough reflected light to take photos outdoors.

After that we hopped on the subway down to the venue where i took a few more shots in Ludlow St.

After seeing them twice in two days i saw them play again on my third night at a loft party in the Lower East Side. Nick the singer did his usual antics of climbing onto anything he could think of. I’m not sure the New Yorkers knew what to make of it, but it sure was entertaining. Even for the third time in as many nights.

AM Eyewear party photos

I was back doing the social photo thing the other week at the Gaelic Club. It was a party thrown by AM Eyewear. So i got paid in cash and free sunglasses – noice.

There were lots of fashionable kids getting messy off free sangria.

A few bands played including The Temper Trap, Shaky Hands and The Death Set.

Death Set are mental in the best possible way. Two dudes on guitar with an iPod providing backing beats. They send the crowd into anarchic abandon. Stage diving, dancing, nudity, blood, sweat and cheers.
