<p>On Saturday night <a href="http://www.expatriateband.com/">Expatriate</a> headlined a sold out show at The Gaelic Club. </p>
<p><a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/expatriate-gaelic/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/expatriate_063007_0219.JPG" alt="Expatriate" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>Similarly to the other week when <a href="http://www.boudist.com/archive/2007/06/24/dappled_cities_fly_and_red_riders_tour_photos.php">Dappled Cities Fly and Red Riders played the Metro</a>, this was another case of a Sydney band playing a triumphant sold out show in their hometown. </p>
<p><a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/expatriate-gaelic/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/expatriate_063007_0153.JPG" alt="Expatriate" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>It feels like Expatriate have broken through the trendy indie band scene into a more mainstream following. The crowd wasn&#8217;t the regular industry types and subdued cool kids, it was genuine fans who sung along to all the songs and bought the t-shirt at the end of the night. The band are played on Nova, get features in the Telegraph and tour with Simple Minds and Powderfinger. There seems to be a momentum pushing them beyond their Sydney inner city roots.</p>
<p><a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/expatriate-gaelic/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/expatriate_063007_0039a.JPG" alt="Expatriate" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>I spent a little time with the band before they went onstage. It was quite strange to discover them all warming up by singing in the ladies toilet backstage. It sounded great and was quite a privelege to get my own private performance.</p>
<p><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/OJqAiLGwRHQ"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param>
<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/OJqAiLGwRHQ" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object></p>
<p>I took a little video on my phone. Damian and Dave (the bassist) were singing by themselves when Ben came in to tell them Bit By Bats were almost finished their set. </p>
<p><a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/expatriate-gaelic/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/expatriate_063007_0020.JPG" alt="Expatriate" border="0" /></a><br />

<p><a href="http://www.myspace.com/expatriateband">Expatriate</a>&#8216;s debut album <em>In The Midst of This</em> is out this week in Australia.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been a long time fan of the band &#8211; first seeing them 2 years ago at a <a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/cut-copy">gig with Cut Copy</a> and <a href="http://www.boudist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-search.cgi?tag=expatriate&amp;blog_id=1">i&#8217;ve mentioned them a bit since then</a>. They are Boudist endorsed.</p>
<p><img src="http://boudist.com/images/expatriate_0675.JPG" alt="Expatriate" width="500" height="750" /></p>
<p>These are some rather impromptu photos i took of them in January. They&#8217;ve since done a shoot with LA based Aussie expat <a href="http://www.nabilphotography.com/">Nabil Elderkin</a> as well as <a href="http://www.ianjennings.com.au/">Ian Jennings</a>. My pics are rather ordinary by comparison, so i don&#8217;t think you&#8217;ll be seeing them anywhere but here. </p>
<p><img src="http://boudist.com/images/expatriate-40.JPG" alt="Expatriate" width="500" height="333" />
<p>These live ones are from their showcase gig at SXSW in March.</p>
<p><img src="http://boudist.com/images/expatriate-21.JPG" alt="Expatriate" width="500" height="333" /></p>
<p>And here they are at the <a href="http://www.mtv.com.au/avma/">MTV AVMA&#8217;s</a> last night. They&#8217;ve come a long way.</p>
<p><img src="http://boudist.com/images/expatriate-mtv.JPG" alt="Expatriate at the MTV AVMAs" width="500" height="750" /></p>
<p>To promote the release of the new album Expatriate are embarking on a national tour in June. Dates are on <a href="http://www.myspace.com/expatriateband">their myspace</a>. Do check them out. </p>

<p>They&#8217;re very good, live and on record &#8211; i played their EP endlessly after i got it last year. The international tour seems to have given them more vigor, with Ben the singer venturing into the crowd at times, and generally being a more expressive, charismatic frontman than i&#8217;d seen before. They&#8217;re soon to go on tour supporting Simple Minds which is a pretty good match up with their synthy anthems.</p>
