Here’s some photos from the Aria Awards nominations announcement this morning at the Sydney Theatre in Walsh Bay.

There was 5 awards given out today (called the ‘Artisan’ awards) – the rest are given out at the main ceremony on October 28.

Above is Josh Pyke, who was awarded the Best Production Aria alongside Wayne Connolly.

Expatriate at The Gaelic Theatre

On Saturday night Expatriate headlined a sold out show at The Gaelic Club.

Similarly to the other week when Dappled Cities Fly and Red Riders played the Metro, this was another case of a Sydney band playing a triumphant sold out show in their hometown.

It feels like Expatriate have broken through the trendy indie band scene into a more mainstream following. The crowd wasn’t the regular industry types and subdued cool kids, it was genuine fans who sung along to all the songs and bought the t-shirt at the end of the night. The band are played on Nova, get features in the Telegraph and tour with Simple Minds and Powderfinger. There seems to be a momentum pushing them beyond their Sydney inner city roots.

I spent a little time with the band before they went onstage. It was quite strange to discover them all warming up by singing in the ladies toilet backstage. It sounded great and was quite a privelege to get my own private performance.

I took a little video on my phone. Damian and Dave (the bassist) were singing by themselves when Ben came in to tell them Bit By Bats were almost finished their set.

Powderfinger live at The Four Seasons

Powderfinger are currently touring Australia, doing promo shows at hotel ballrooms. It’s to promote the launch of their new album Dream Days at the Hotel Existence. I took some photos at their gig at the Four Seasons in Sydney last week.

The band were supported by Expatriate, soon to embark on their own headlining national tour.

Powderfinger are rumoured to be doing a major Australian tour this September in a double bill with Silverchair.

Expatriate – new album and tour

Expatriate‘s debut album In The Midst of This is out this week in Australia.

I’ve been a long time fan of the band – first seeing them 2 years ago at a gig with Cut Copy and i’ve mentioned them a bit since then. They are Boudist endorsed.

These are some rather impromptu photos i took of them in January. They’ve since done a shoot with LA based Aussie expat Nabil Elderkin as well as Ian Jennings. My pics are rather ordinary by comparison, so i don’t think you’ll be seeing them anywhere but here.

These live ones are from their showcase gig at SXSW in March.

And here they are at the MTV AVMA’s last night. They’ve come a long way.

To promote the release of the new album Expatriate are embarking on a national tour in June. Dates are on their myspace. Do check them out.

Expatriate concert web stream

Last night at a swanky Oxford St bar Expatriate played a short gig to a group of friends and fans. It was streamed live on the internet by defhead and can now be watched in full. After the songs the band came back for a rather hilarious Q & A session.

Expatriate will have an EP and then album out early next year.

Here’s the video for the new single, Play A Part. It’s directed by by Kris Moyes, well known for a number of Modular videos.

Expatriate Homecoming

I saw Expatriate play at Sydney Uni’s Manning Bar on Thursday. After a whirlwind tour of London, Toronto, Austin, New York and LA they were back playing with confidence to a warm home town crowd.

They’re very good, live and on record – i played their EP endlessly after i got it last year. The international tour seems to have given them more vigor, with Ben the singer venturing into the crowd at times, and generally being a more expressive, charismatic frontman than i’d seen before. They’re soon to go on tour supporting Simple Minds which is a pretty good match up with their synthy anthems.
