On Monday night Time Out Sydney held a party at Ms G’s to launch their Food Awards issue featuring Porteño‘s elegant maitre d’ Sarah Doyle on the cover. An opportune time to share some pictures from the shoot.

Behind the Scenes of Australia’s Next Top Model

Back in June i had an assignment for ACP magazines, shooting pictures behind-the-scenes at the taping of an Australia’s Next Top Model shoot.

I’ve never seen the show before, except for that kerfuffle over Sarah Murdoch announcing the wrong winner. No such problems on a non-live taping like i was tagging along with though.

The shoot was a challenge for the models at B2 Studios, an advertising photo shoot for Kotex with photographer Stephen Ward. Five girls posed separately for the photo with the winner being chosen to feature in the real advertisement.

After the five models are shot, mockups of the ad layouts are printed with their photo in it. Here, photographer Stephen Ward surveys the images determining whose photo is best.

Ksubi held their 10th anniversary Fashion Week show at the cavernous Royal Hall of Industries.

Ksubi almost imploded in bankruptcy last year, and they jokingly mock themselves as has beens, but this big brashy show seemed to be sending a message that they’re here to stay.

Friedrich Gray : RAFW 2010

Photos from backstage at Friedrich Gray‘s Australian Fashion Week show.

Friedrich Gray was the first ever fashion show i photographed. It was in 2007 at The Kirk, a church in Surry Hills and i was snapping for the now defunct Australian edition of Dazed and Confused.

I’ve shot each of his fashion week shows since, so it was nice to keep up the tradition.

I’m a bit late to the game posting my photos from Rosemount Australian Fashion Week, but expect a glut to come.

Most of the week I was shooting backstage for Little Hero, a PR agency who looks after the best young labels.

Romance Was Born open a store

Here’s some snaps from the opening night party for fashion label Romance Was Born‘s first ever retail shop.

It’s a ‘concept store’ in Paddington called Pearl’s Dream and is open for a couple of months until January 31st.

It features many of the items they launched at their stunning show at Australian Fashion Week this year.

The store was officially opened by Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson. A fitting pair to christen the space as it harkens back to the Flamingo Park ‘frock salon’ they opened in Sydney in the 1970s. Romance Was Born’s work is in the same vein too; bold and colourful with an unabashed love for Australiana.

The shop is next door to Romance Was Born’s SOYA mentors Zimmerman in Paddington – at 2A Glenmore Rd.

Here’s what the press release states:

“Pearls Dream” continues on from the “Doilies and Pearls, Oysters and Shells” SS0910 collection. It is a concept store which celebrates the collection and its collaborators.

“Doilies and Pearls, Oysters and Shells” features collaborative works by two Australian artists, Patrick Doherty and Indigenious shell worker Esme Timbery, and also jewellery by Romance Was Born’s accessories designer Paul Bonomelli.

Pearl’s Dream is Romance Was Born’s tribute to the stylish elegance of Grandmas and the olden days whilst exploring their fascination with the sea; that crystalline underwater world where mermaids are the keepers of its mysterious watery secrets. Romance Was Born open up nanna’s glory box worn by the tides of time to reveal long forgotten treasures – glorious old jewels, budgies in a cage, 4711, a fine bone china tea set with a mother-of-pearl glaze, delicately aged lace doilies and other assorted goodies from a bygone era.

Hope and judgement at David Jones’s model casting

It was a nice easy shoot to start the week off as i popped down to Bondi Pavilion to photograph the model casting for David Jones Spring/Summer season launch in August.

Over 100 hopeful models strutted their stuff, vying for a catwalk spot alongside Miranda Kerr.

Romance Was Born : RAFW 2009

The last of my fashion week posts is from the spectacular Romance Was Born show at The Wharf Restaurant on Sydney Harbour. As with previous shows from the designers it was extravagant, theatrical, kitsch and featured my old neighbour Pauly.

There was an aquatic theme going on, with shells, sea creatures, scales, coral, sea captains and nymphs.

The show was all set to the ethereal tunes of Bat for Lashes before the grand finale set to Prince. It brought tears to the eyes of several in the crowd.

Next up from Fashion Week was Therese Rawsthorne who held her show on site at the Overseas Passenger Terminal.

Her show featured the model who seemed to be the “it girl” of the week, Myf Shepherd.
