FBi Radio Still Life Art Auction

Tonight FBi Radio is holding an art auction at the Art Gallery of New South Wales to raise funds for the station.

They’ve assembled an a-list lineup of artists who’ve donated works that anyone can buy tonight.

For the poster they asked if i could photograph some fruit and veg with the word ‘Still Life’ carved out of it. An odd request, but i like to help FBi where i can.

We did the picture at youeni provides, a cafe and green grocer in Surry Hills. Chris Starke and the staff there skilfully did the carving alongside Nina from FBi.

The flyer was designed by Joshua Crowley.

On Saturday night i took some pictures at FBi Radio‘s Final Fling concert at the Metro.

Rather than shoot it traditional event coverage style, I set up a paper roll and light to do some portraits.

Jinja Safari were pretty impressive. They’ve only been playing a short while but already have some polished songs and enthusiastic live show. Part of the Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel, Vampire Weekend zeitgeist.

I intended to take more photos but was in an awkward spot and had to pack down prematurely, so this was it. But there’ll be abundantly more musician portrait opportunities at Splendour.

FBi Radio fundraising gigs

As Sydney music fans would know by now, FBi Radio is on a fundraising blitz to raise funds to keep them on air.

As well as the Ask Richard campaign they’re throwing a massive series of gigs this month with all proceeds going to FBi.

There’s some fantastic line ups, well worth parting with your hard earned dollars for.

To commemorate such a momentous co-operative event FBi thought it appropriate to document in a big group photo.

Schools out!

Almost 80 musicians from Sydney bands taking part in the festivities assembled at Carriageworks. The first set up was challenging trying to fit everyone in, but i just about managed it.

It was a bit strange, parading myself in front of everyone, barking instructions.

Holding hands for FBi

The next set up i decided to do a really long photo, inspired partly by this photo by Garry Trinh of people queuing for The Strokes tickets.

I had everyone stand in line together and hold hands with the person next to them. The hand holding was to signify unity, but mainly as a way to loosen people up. They’d be made so uncomfortable by holding a strangers hand that they’d relax a bit for the picture.

It looks best in this special page i assembled that you can scroll along.

The SMAC Awards

Last night at the Sydney Opera House the inaugural SMAC awards were dished out.

Presented by Time Out Sydney and FBi Radio, the SMACs recognise the best of Sydney’s Music, Art and Culture.

Many of Sydney’s music and arts community were in attendance, saluting their peers, wearing nice frocks, admiring the view and getting pissed on the free booze.

Toby Schmitz (aka The Schmitz) with Ella Scott Lynch. Toby was pipped for the ‘Best Actor/Performer’ award by his acting/writing buddy/nemesis Brendan Cowell.

The adorabubble Katherine and Kate from Greedy Hen. Winners of ‘Best Arts Newcomer’.

The KillaQueenz performed and were nominated for ‘Best Music Performance’.

The tallest troubador in town, Jack Ladder played a tune before scooting off to play his own show at Oxford Art Factory.

The bizarre and hilarious Pig Island were nominated for ‘Best Artist/Performer’ and performed a Billy Piper tune.

What could an award ceremony be this year without The Presets?

Fresh from similar wins at the J Awards and the ARIAs, they won ‘Record of the Year’ for Apocalypso. Despite all the fame, fortune and acclaim, they were graciously humble and obviously appreciative of the support FBi has always given them.

Spod enthralled the crowd with a performance with the Orsumettes and was also nominated for ‘Best Music Performance’.

Irishman Fergus Linehan took out the ‘SMAC of the Year’ award in recognition of his work as Director of Sydney Festival for the past three years.

After the awards were given out we all got sozzled on the free wine and Lovells.

Talking on the radio and in Newcastle

I’m going to be on FBI Radio tonight, during a show called The Bridge from 8pm. I’ll be playing some tunes from Sydney bands – mainly ones i’ve photographed lately such as Belles Will Ring, Dappled Cities Fly, Sarah Blasko and more. I’ll also be talking about taking photos, even though radio isn’t really the best medium for that. I’ve never been on radio before so i hope i don’t make an idiot of myself.

Tomorrow Matt Booy and I head to Newcastle to talk about music photography as part of Newcastle Music Week. At 1.30pm we’ll be in Newcastle City Hall yacking away about photography and showing some pictures. If you’re in the area please come along and ask us questions.

There’s a number of other good speakers tomorrow including Sarah Norris, editor of Drum Media talking about music journalism and Paula Jones, who’s the publicist for events like Homebake talking about generating publicity. See the full lineup.
