Who We Are wins an ASTRA Award

Last week a documentary series i worked on called Who We Are won an ASTRA Award for Most Outstanding Documentary. It’s a series of short profiles of seven indigenous Australian artists and is highly deserving of its acclaim. Much credit is due to creator and director Dei El-Ayoubi as well as DOP Tony Luu for making it look so good. And props to Foxtel for funding it too.

These photos have been sitting on my hard drive for too long, it’s time they get an airing here. I present to you Kamahi Djordan King and his flamboyant alter ego Constantina Bush.

They were shot in June last year while i was taking stills on Who We Are, a Foxtel series of short profiles of Indigenous Australian artists. The same project as the Dan Sultan photos.

I’d never heard of Kamahi or Constantina before working on this, but now i think he should be considered a national treasure. Endlessly creative, he makes a living as a visual artist with his personal and contemporary take on Aboriginal art. But he also performs as the outrageous Constantina Bush in a stage show with his backup dancers The Bushettes.

The Foxtel crew filmed Kamahi performing as Constantina Bush up in Queensland at the Dreaming Festival and later went to Melbourne to get the visual artist side of him at the Koorie Heritage Trust.

Here’s some photos i took of Dan Sultan while i was working as the stills photographer on Foxtel’s Who We Are series.

We spent a morning at the Harold Park tram sheds which is a beautiful derelict space housing several crumbling graffiti covered old Sydney trams. Yes, Sydney trams.

In the afternoon the shoot moved to Jackson’s Rare Guitars in Annandale.

The crew also filmed Dan’s show at the Factory Theatre in Marrickville.

It was such a pleasure working on this job. Dan’s such a gentleman, and the crew were bloody brilliant.

Behind the Scenes of Australia’s Next Top Model

Back in June i had an assignment for ACP magazines, shooting pictures behind-the-scenes at the taping of an Australia’s Next Top Model shoot.

I’ve never seen the show before, except for that kerfuffle over Sarah Murdoch announcing the wrong winner. No such problems on a non-live taping like i was tagging along with though.

The shoot was a challenge for the models at B2 Studios, an advertising photo shoot for Kotex with photographer Stephen Ward. Five girls posed separately for the photo with the winner being chosen to feature in the real advertisement.

After the five models are shot, mockups of the ad layouts are printed with their photo in it. Here, photographer Stephen Ward surveys the images determining whose photo is best.

I was incredibly fortunate and proud to be involved in this Who We Are project. It’s a series of video profiles on indigenous artists that will air on Foxtel next month.

Something from the archives today with a look at a shoot with young Cairns band The Medics that i did in June 2009.

I’ve been lucky enough to shoot stills on a Foxtel project that’s profiling various indigenous artists, and that’s what took me to the Dreaming Festival last year for several things, including this photo with The Medics.

The video crew were filming the band on a road by a river, and i had a few minutes to drag them away for pictures.

When we got to the location i set up the backdrop and lights with my trusty assistant Elleni.

Testing

The lighting set up was pretty simple and self evident. Two umbrellas, one to white out the backdrop, one to light the band. The power was set to match the daylight.

One thing i’ve learned working on film shoots is that stills is understandably way down the list of priorities. So it was about four hours between the test shot and getting the band in.

Thankfully the weather cleared up nicely in that time. Good for my shots, not so good for the continuity on the film shoot.

More testing. Don't hate me Elleni and Brooke.

I took some pictures of each band member before bringing them all in.

It was feeling a little static so we did a silly shot too.

Then a couple without the backdrop.

If it all gets a bit too serious then getting your talent to jump is a good solution.

And now of course the line-up of the band has changed, so the pictures are out of date and relegated to history.

Sigh.

Griffin Theatre 30th Anniversary

These are some portraits i took of various people involved with the Griffin Theatre Company over the past 30 years.

I was commissioned by Foxtel who were filming a video piece at the same time.

The shoot coincided with the day Griffin were throwing a street party for the 30th anniversary and kickstarting a fundraising initiative for renovations.

I had a little office set up with a red curtain and would ferry people in to have their picture snapped.

I hired a ring flash for the occasion, the first time i’ve ever used one. It’s a lighting technique i’ve always loved – it reminds me of magazine portraits in the 90′s that photographer Rankin made his signature style.

The people i was photographing were predominantly, writers and directors. Behind-the-scenes types uncomfortable in front of the lens. So i brought along some props – balloons and confetti for the 30th birthday theme.

The other thing i did to try and make people comfortable was asking them to tell me a story – so i could capture them in conversation.

Sydney Dance Company promo video

Back in August i had a dream gig shooting stills on the set of a promo video for Sydney Dance Company.

The one minute piece was shot with six dancers from the Sydney Dance Company, choreographed by Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela.

It was all filmed in the Deutsche Bank building in Sydney’s CBD.
