Photos from backstage at Friedrich Gray‘s Australian Fashion Week show.

Friedrich Gray was the first ever fashion show i photographed. It was in 2007 at The Kirk, a church in Surry Hills and i was snapping for the now defunct Australian edition of Dazed and Confused.

I’ve shot each of his fashion week shows since, so it was nice to keep up the tradition.

A model on the catwalk

During Rosemount Australian Fashion Week i had the privilege of photographing a number of shows backstage for fashion PR firm Little Hero. They represent the cream of exciting young designers including Friedrich Gray, ANT!PODiUM, Therese Rawsthorne and Romance Was Born.

These photos are from the Friedrich Gray show, a sydney label designed by Ben Pollitt. The show was held in the UTS Atrium on Jones St, a spot i’m sure had never held an event of this nature before.

Australian Fashion Week 2008

Between my regular work i managed to squeeze in some time to shoot a few pictures at Australian Fashion Week. I saw shows by Friedrich Gray, TV and Romance Was Born.

Apart from shooting Friedrich Gray last year, i’d never been to a fashion show before. Photo-wise it’s like shooting fish in a barrel, beautiful people made up in nice frocks makes for easy pictures.

It’s a bit of a mad house for photographers though, dozens of snappers all jockeying for the best position. I preferred shooting backstage where you have to be creative with light, and you can also snap some closer portraits of the models.

I don’t know much about fashion but i was mightily impressed by the Romance Was Born show. Held off the main site of Fashion Week, they took over the main hall of the Conservatorium of Music. With no runway as such, the models paraded up and down the aisles in a series of colourful tribal influenced outfits.

I’d never photographed a fashion show before but always wanted to. So i was stoked when Dazed and Confused asked me to cover this Friedrich Gray fashion show. It was back in April, around fashion week time.

The venue was a lovely old church on Cleveland St called The Kirk. After the fashion parade a band played which contained a mix of members from Midnight Juggernauts, Lost Valentinos and Mercy Arms.
