I almost skipped posting these, but i’ve got 6 years of photographing Homebake here, so i ought to keep up the tradition. It’s also the first music festival i ever photographed so i have a soft spot for it.

Any time you get an opportunity to see or photograph Nick Cave it’s a treat.

Shooting officially, you only get one song, not the standard three. But he gives a more visceral and compelling performance in one song than most bands do in their whole set.

A festival is largely about the crowd and atmosphere of the event, so i always try and capture that. I’m not keen on shooting hundreds of social snaps, i try for a more candid approach.

Anyway, back to the bands.

After 7 years as a band, The Scare yesterday declared they were pulling the plug and disbanding after their next run of four shows.

It’s always disappointing when a band you’ve supported and enjoyed splits up. And The Scare will always be close to my heart because they were one of the very first bands i documented with my camera, way back in 2004 on my crappy point and shoot before i even knew how to use an SLR.

That photo above felt like the start of something exciting when it came to shooting live bands for me. In your face, emotional and loud.

The Scare were always a blast to photograph, not least because lead singer Kiss was so confrontational and unpredictable.

When The Scare performed at the AMP award ceremony in 2009 i thought it was going to be the start of a new trajectory for them. Their new Daniel Johns produced record was about to be released, they performed their strong lead single No Money, and i felt for sure they’d be a good bet to pick up the Australian Music prize the next year. Shockingly they didn’t even get to the finalists.

Lovely day out as usual, and this year marked the fifth time i’ve photographed Homebake.

It was the first festival i ever photographed with proper accreditation. Thanks Sonia for sorting out that pass all those years ago.

Homebake 2008

On a sweltering Saturday last week Homebake rolled round again, taking over Sydney’s Domain.

The visual highlight was surely Nick Littlemore’s dramatic entrance for Pnau’s set.

Hoisted angelically into the rafters to sing their opening song Wild Strawberries, it was a superbly Spinal Tap moment.

In a hark back to 2005 when the Finn brothers headlined Homebake, Crowded House closed the evening with some sing-a-longs.

You Am I were in fine form, with some strings and extra percussion accompaniment.

It wasn’t really all that exciting to me, but the agency photographers were all snap happy for Gabriella Cilmi.

I’m glad i finally got see Violent Soho, reminding me of the nineties stoner grunge i used to listen to. Quite unique on the scene at the moment.

Everyone’s favourite band seems to be Eddy Current Suppression Ring. SPIN magazine too.

Dash and Will were really sweet. Nice pop tunes. A more sunny and colourful Tegan and Sara. I can see them becoming rather popular. Jerry from whothehell.net is in love with them.

Homebake 2007 photos

Here’s some photos from Homebake 2007. The day was headlined by the Divinyls on the main stage and Pnau on the Dome stage. Both acts put on fantastic sets, which was a surprising since they’ve both been off the performing circuit for a while. Chrissie Amphlett still has all the moves as a frontwoman and was a joy to watch.

Elton John’s new favourite act Pnau still has it too, revving the crowd up with a pretty spectacular live show.

Some of the other acts on the all Aussie (and the odd Kiwi) lineup included Cut Copy, Belles Will Ring, Sarah Blasko, Angus and Julia Stone, Missy Higgins, Paul Dempsey, Missy Higgins and Scribe.

Homebake 2006 – Part 3

And the third and final installment of Homebake photos. It was Silverchair’s year to headline, playing some of their classics as well as a number of songs off their coming album Young Modern.

Surprisingly The Vines were one of my highlights of the festival. Craig seems to be really enjoying himself onstage these days, not like the tortured soul of years gone by.

Round 2 of Homebake photos. That shot above was the crowd during the Hilltop Hoods set. While i was sheltered with the St Johns Ambulance folks they would have been pelted with rain.

Homebake 2006 – Part 1

Here’s the first batch of my Homebake Festival photos.

There’s so many great Australian acts these days you’re spoilt for choice of things to see. Even the torrential downpour later in the day didn’t dampen spirits. But they did stop my photographing for a while.

In this set are shots of Young and Restless who scored their slot on the bill after their Unearthed win. At the other end of the spectrum is Hollywood actress Toni Collette, whose set began just as the skies opened.

My photos from Homebake are now online (also available at 3DWorld). It was a wonderful day out, perfect weather, people and music. Plus i spent all day taking photos. Doesn’t get much better than that.

The shots aren’t my best work. It was my first time shooting a big festival, with high stages to contend with, crowded photo pits, and different lighting conditions from stage to stage. But lots of fun.

And thank god i didn’t have to battle a crowd like this!

Life doesn’t get much better than when you’re standing at the feet of Neil and Tim Finn singing Weather With You to tens of thousands of people.

I remember absolutely beaming at strangers around me, getting the biggest heartwarming smiles right back.

I’ll post a bunch of photos soon.
