I dropped by the Hopetoun to see Swedish crooner Jens Lekman last night. He was wonderful, a man and his uke singing sentimental love songs. Songs about falling out of love with his girl during anti-Bush riots in his home town of Göteborg, about cutting off the end of his finger, about a joke he can’t remember the punchline for. Sweet little ditties sung with passion and good humour, mainly just him and his ukelele but sometimes with his cute little bass player and computer backing track. For one tune he stepped away from the stage onto the foldback speaker, singing and playing with no amplification to a silently transfixed packed out Hopetoun. For another he got a couple of girls from the audience to do percussion.

Sublime pop sung with conviction and charisma. Some pictures.

Red Riders rock the shop. I saw them launch their EP at the Hopetoun last Saturday. It was the 3rd time i’d seen em, so i obviously like them and their super catchy pop/rock tunes. And so did all the punters at the Hopetoun, the place was packed to the rafters, mainly with young girls squealing and shouting like it was a Beatles concert. Ridermania.

They’re playing next Saturday night (4th September) @Newtown with that other noteworthy red Sydney band, theredsunband, they who do not like spaces (or capitals). I’ve not seen them before, but i’ve only heard good things. And with a lush female lead singer i’m bound to like em.

I won the Young Heart Attack ticket last Friday because i was busting some sick moves on the dance floor at Spectrum. Ok that’s not entirely true. I was on the dance floor, moving in a semi-retarded fashion when a young lady handed me an envelope with a notice saying i’d won a ticket. Perhaps she felt sorry for me. Or maybe she saw me chatting to the fella from Franz Ferdinand earlier and mistakenly presumed i was hip.

Before my sickness took hold i went to see Carla Werner play at the Hopetoun. As expected she was amazing, captivating, enthralling and many other superlatives.

Through a series of odd coincidences i ended hanging out with a mate of Carla’s for most of the evening. Despite me being a bit star struck i took the opportunity to meet Carla who was thoroughly charming. I even got the photo to prove it. I tried to remain composed for the photo, but inside i was grinning like an excited schoolboy.
