<p>
Sydney record label and tour operator <a href="http://www.popfrenzy.com.au/">Popfrenzy</a> hosted a killer lineup of overseas bands aboard a boat cruise on Sydney Harbour earlier this month. It was the same boat used for <a href="http://www.boudist.com/archive/2006/02/15/all_aboard_the_loveboat.php">The Presets loveboat gig</a> a few weeks earlier but the crowd was less glam more indie this time round. Sydney turned on a perfect evening for it too.
</p>
<p><a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/popfrenzy-afloat/"><img src="http://www.boudist.com/images/pretty-girls-make-graves-012a.JPG" alt="Pretty Girls Make Graves" width="499" height="333" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>The line-up consisted of <a href="http://www.jenslekman.com/">Jens Lekman</a>, <a href="http://www.gossipyouth.com/">The Gossip</a>,<a href="http://www.frenchkissrecords.com/bands_lesSavyFav.html"> Les Savy Fav</a>, <a href="http://www.myspace.com/thunderbirdsarenow">Thunderbirds are Now!</a> and <a href="http://www.prettygirlsmakegraves.com/">Pretty Girls Make Graves</a>. All top acts that bubble away beneath the mainstream (and kick against it).</p>
<p><a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/popfrenzy-afloat/"><img src="http://www.boudist.com/images/the-gossip-004.JPG" alt="The Gossip" width="499" height="333" border="0" /></a>
<p>The main revelation of the night was <a href="http://myspace.com/Gossipband">The Gossip</a>, a three piece with a punk attitude and a dynamite lead singer and rhythm section. Have a listen to <a href="http://www.krs5rc.com/krs/bands/thegossip/audio/SITWOC.mp3">Standing in the Way of Control</a> (mp3) to hear what i mean.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/popfrenzy-afloat/"><img src="http://www.boudist.com/images/les-savy-fav-022a.JPG" alt="Les Savy Fav" width="499" height="333" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>Les Savy Fav were entertaining as ever and Jens Lekman made hearts flutter with his sentimental ballads.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s some <a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/popfrenzy-afloat/">photos of Popfrenzy Afloat</a> in my gallery. Speaking of which, i&#8217;ve upgraded the gallery software, so let me know if anything is broken or you&#8217;ve got a suggestion to improve it. </p>

<p>I dropped by the Hopetoun to see Swedish crooner <a href="http://www.jenslekman.tk/">Jens Lekman</a> last night. He was wonderful, a man and his uke singing sentimental love songs. Songs about falling out of love with his girl during anti-Bush riots in his home town of G&ouml;teborg, about cutting off the end of his finger, about a joke he can&#8217;t remember the punchline for. Sweet little ditties sung with passion and good humour, mainly just him and his ukelele but sometimes with his cute little bass player and computer backing track. For one tune he stepped away from the stage onto the foldback speaker, singing and playing with no amplification to a silently transfixed packed out Hopetoun. For another he got a couple of girls from the audience to do percussion. </p>
<p>Sublime pop sung with conviction and charisma. <a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/jens-lekman">Some pictures</a>.</p>
