MTV Australia Awards 2009 : The Performances

A couple of weekends ago i was part of the crew from Blue Murder Studios photographing the Vodafone MTV Australia Awards for MTV.

It’s a good gig to get because it’s much better access than the usual red carpet and media room frenzy. I thankfully managed to avoid both those places.

It means getting to shoot the actual show, which few photographers are allowed to do.

Because it’s made for TV the production values are high, lots of light, pyrotechnics and showmanship. On the flipside, because it’s all designed for TV it’s often hard to shoot. There’s no photo pit as such, that’s filled with tracks for the video cameras. So i’m glued to one spot at an awkward angle, dodging video crews and explosions.

Kaiser Chiefs performed Never Miss a Beat amidst the pyrotechnics.

The Fray got all ballady.

Jessica Mauboy appeared to be rather Beyonce inspired for her performance.

Shooting the awards also meant i’m probably one of the few people to shoot The Killers live in recent memory. They don’t allow press photographers in to their shows and photographers are banned from shooting them at festival appearances too.

Wolfmother debuted their new single Back Round to close the show.

Kaiser Chiefs at the Enmore

Last night i scored a last minute pass to snap Kaiser Chiefs at The Enmore Theatre.

They’re always a pleasure and a challenge to shoot.

A pleasure because lead singer Ricky is so animated, leaping about the stage with loads of energy. And a challenge for the same reasons, in low coloured lights all that movement is hard to freeze in a good shot.

It was a bit of a concert photographers reunion down the front. There was Lucky, Anthony, Ashley, Graham, Mark, Anna and more i’ve rudely forgotten.

And although he wasn’t there on the night, the ghost of Danny North was breathing down my neck challenging me to get something better than all his crackers. Can’t say i did.

Kaiser Chiefs in Sydney

Here’s some photos of Kaiser Chiefs at the Hordern Pavilion on Sunday night.

I’ve photographed them a couple of times before and every time i try and nail a good shot of Ricky (the singer) jumping.

I still haven’t got one i’m happy with but i get a little closer each time.

The Kaisers sure know how to entertain.

Foos and Kaisers

Some shots i took of the Kaiser Chiefs and Foo Fighters at The Superdome last week are now online at Triple J.

As is the norm for accredited photographers i only got to photograph the first three songs of each band. Usually you get to stick around and watch the show, but at this gig i was escorted out of the arena with the other photographers after three songs. So i can’t really tell you how the show was.

I’d post more photos here, but i signed a contract basically waiving my right to publish them anywhere except Triple J.

It ain’t all wine and roses photographing from that pit, but it’s still the best spot in the house for those three songs and i wouldn’t give it up for quids.
