Sound Relief Sydney

My Saturday was spent at Sound Relief Sydney, snapping pictures, getting rained on and revelling in nostalgia.

The concert was held at the Sydney Cricket Ground in tandem with another concert at the Melbourne Cricket Ground with all proceeds going to benefit victims of the recent Victorian bushfires and Queensland floods.

The highlight of the whole day came early, during Coldplay’s opening set when they brought out John Farnham to sing You’re the Voice. It was pretty spine tingling to hear that song belted out with a whole stadium singing along.

Coldplay followed that with Fix You and another thrilling moment when Chris Martin leapt off the stage and into the audience and sprinted to the back of the crowd. The Channel V footage shows the chaos of it as the camera men struggle to work out where he’s gone.

Wolfmother II followed Coldplay, debuting the new band.

Later in the afternoon Taylor Swift whipped the teens into a lather of Beatlemania style excitement. Girls were screaming and crying at the sight of her. Weird.

This was taken as Jet was playing Are You Gonna Be My Girl.

In another nod to nostalgia Icehouse performed in the early evening, running through their 80′s hits like Electric Blue and Great Southern Land.

To close the Sydney Sound Relief Concert we had a Beegee, in the form of Barry Gibb performing with Olivia Newton-John.

As impressive as the Beegees once were it was a strange choice of finale for the primarily young crowd.

The Great Escape – Day 2

Day 2 of the Great Escape Festival saw a bit of rain, but it didn’t dampen people’s spirits.

On the main stage Little Birdy entertained in the afternoon, Ziggy Marley played the dusk set and John Butler Trio headlined.

In one of the food tents this fella played the bazouki to a techno beat which proved quite popular. He appeared to just play the same tune over and over all night.

As usual the non-musical entertainment proved popular – including a performance art type thing called Pork in the Rafters.

Homebake 2006 – Part 1

Here’s the first batch of my Homebake Festival photos.

There’s so many great Australian acts these days you’re spoilt for choice of things to see. Even the torrential downpour later in the day didn’t dampen spirits. But they did stop my photographing for a while.

In this set are shots of Young and Restless who scored their slot on the bill after their Unearthed win. At the other end of the spectrum is Hollywood actress Toni Collette, whose set began just as the skies opened.

Legs Eleven Concert photos

I’ve just uploaded a gallery of photos of the Legs 11 concert, held at the Domain on the 27th October. The show featured Sarah Blasko, Little Birdy, Clare Bowditch, Bob Evans plus Tex Perkins and Tim Rogers accompanied by the Sydney Youth Orchestra. It’s the concert i took that Sarah Blasko and Katy Steele cover photo for.

It was a lovely evening; warm weather, clear skies, great music. It was a bit of an ‘adult contemporary’ vibe with people mainly sitting down on their picnic blankets sipping wine. Much more civilised than your regular outdoor concert.

I had AAA access which was pretty cool, it meant i could go backstage and also on the side of stage.

Katy Steele and Sarah Blasko

I’ve been keeping mum about this shoot, but i’m excited to post these shots i took of Katy Steele (of Little Birdy) and Sarah Blasko. They were taken to promote the Legs 11 festival and it’s going on the cover of The Brag next week.

The opportunity to photograph these queens of the Australian music scene was rather thrilling. The shoot couldn’t have been easier, Sarah and Katy were both lovely. While Katy was a lot more comfortable in front of the camera i think i got some shots where they both look happy and relaxed. I’m surprised how stress free it all went considering there was about 10 people hanging about scrutinising things. Plus the fact i was nervous as hell.

The photos were taken in Tony Mott’s backyard of all places. I’ve yet to properly meet the man himself, but i have done a photoshoot in his backyard.

Legs 11 is happening next Friday night at The Domain in the Royal Botanical Gardens. It’s a sit down with a blanket type affair, hence the picnic set up in the photo. Sarah Blasko and Little Birdy have new albums out this week, so they ought to be playing a range of new material. Another highlight of the night will be Tex Perkins and Tim Rogers playing with the Sydney Youth Orchestra.

As usual, many thanks to Cybele for her help with the shoot. It’ll be a fun week for us next week in terms of street press exposure, i have The Brag cover and Cybele will have a photo she took for the ARIA awards on the cover of Drum Media.

A night of female rock chicks

If you’ve been reading Boudist a while you may have noticed that i like a good female singer/songwriter/frontwoman. Last night i got to see two of Australia’s best female music types in semi unique circumstances. First off was Sarah Blasko who i saw perform at The Vanguard in Newtown in a special show to preview her new album. I’ve seen her several times now and am always impressed by her distinctive voice and amazing range. The new songs sounded good and i’m really looking forward to hearing the album in order to judge properly. The album’s called ‘The Overture and The Underscore’ and it’s out next week.

After Sarah Blasko it was off to Kings Cross to be an extra on a music video shoot for Little Birdy. A dozen or so of us had to stand about outside this club looking casual while Katy the lead singer pranced around us in a glam little evening dress. If i’m lucky my back or the side of my face just might feature. No doubt the first step on my road to superstardom. The song’s called Tonight’s The Night, i guess it’ll be out in a month or two, so i’ll be keeping my eye on Rage.
