Over the past couple of weeks my local, The Annandale Hotel has been celebrating its ten year anniversary. The place has stood for a lot longer than ten years, but the anniversary marks the time it’s been owned and run in it’s current incarnation by Matt and Dan Rule.

I saw a couple of the gigs, and took a photo for Drum Media to coincide with the anniversary.

While i wouldn’t normally call myself a Jimmy Barnes fan, it was pretty special watching him belting out the hits like Khe Sanh, Flame Trees and Working Class Man. I wasn’t intending to take photos, but when Andy invited me along he said i’d regret it if i didn’t, and he was probably right. So i took a few snaps from behind the bar.

They accompany a story he wrote for Mess and Noise, primarily about his cab ride to the gig.

And here’s a couple of shots i did for Drum Media featuring Richard Clapton (who had to leave before we shot the second shot), Jake and Stav from bluejuice, Jay Whalley from Frenzal Rhomb and Pete Kostic from Regurgitator and Front End Loader.

Interview with Tony Mott

An interview i did with music photographer veteran Tony Mott has just been published on Mess and Noise.

We spoke for about half an hour over Skype, me in Sydney, Tony in his temporary home in Melbourne.

Tony’s someone i’ve always admired in the photography business. He’s gotten where he has through sheer passion for his work and by being a gentleman. It’s a good reminder that sometimes nice guys finish first.

Here’s a few choice quotes from the conversation.

On photo contracts:

“I ignore them. They’re illegal anyway. My only advice is, don’t argue because then you don’t get your access. Just sign it, date it and time it. Almost instantaneously it becomes null and void.”

On Getty Images:

“Getty are obviously quite evil in their strategy and do want to rule the world.”

On competitive photographers:

“Some other photographers always seem to feel like they’re competing with other photographers, i think i’m competing with myself. I always want to be better than i am.”

On switching to digital:

“I hate digital. I still shoot film, but digital’s that much easier and cheaper. People say digital is better, but it’s not better, it’s easier.”

“The good news is that digital is easy to do, the bad news is that it’s harder to sell. Everyone’s doing it.”

On photographing Coldplay at the 2001 Big Day Out:

“We did a session in Auckland and it was really fucking rubbish.”

On why he keeps shooting:

“The beauty of photography is that you’re never the best you’ll ever be. You’ve always got new ideas. I just genuinely enjoy photography.”

Spod at home

I dropped in to Spod‘s place a few weeks ago to take some snaps in his bedroom where he weaves his musical magic.

It was for a feature in Mess and Noise about artist’s creative spaces.

Spod is playing two shows tomorrow (Sunday), an all ages afternoon gig and a night show at Oxford Art Factory. Details on his myspace.

I understand his backing band may be the rhythm section from a certain popular lupine act.

Mess and Noise isn’t just a message board where indie rock snobs go to bitch about stuff and waste time at work. It’s also a rather wonderful Australian music magazine.

The latest issue features an abundance of my photos. The cover shot is one of mine, there’s a 6 page spread of my photos, plus my shots illustrate articles on The Sleepy Jackson and The Model School. So much stuff it seemed to warrant my name on the cover. So that’s all rather nice indeed.

PS. I have a box of Mess and Noise magazines which i’ll take along to 3 Songs. No Flash. So pop in over the weekend if you’d like to pick up a copy.
