<p>Last Saturday saw <a href="http://www.modularpeople.com">Modular</a>&#8216;s <a href="http://www.nevereverland.com.au/">Nevereverland</a> tour kick off in Sydney at the Hordern Pavilion.</p>
<p>The show was a bit of a showcase for Modular acts like <a href="http://www.thepresets.com/">The Presets</a>, <a href="http://www.klaxons.net/">Klaxons</a>, <a href="http://www.myspace.com/cutcopy">Cut Copy</a>, <a href="http://www.ladyhawkemusic.com/">Ladyhawke</a>, <a href="http://www.thebumblebeez.com/">Bumblebeez</a> and <a href="http://www.vanshe.com/">Van She</a>. Invited international guests were geek Berliners <a href="http://www.whitestboyalive.com/">The Whitest Boy Alive</a> and disco queens <a href="http://herculesandloveaffair.com">Hercules and the Love Affair</a>.</p>
<p>The day was a bit of a test for me photographically because i wasn&#8217;t using my typical Canon 5D set up. The night before the gig, the mirror fell off the shutter of the 5D and it was unusable. <a href="http://bangbangdot.com/">Cybele</a> saved the day by lending me her Nikon D3. It&#8217;s the bees knees of low light photography, but i felt like a complete <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newbie">n00b</a> with it&#8217;s back to front dials and unfamiliar set up. I managed though, and made good use of it&#8217;s high ISO capabilities.</p>
<p> <a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/nevereverland/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/Ladyhawke.jpg" alt="ladyhawke" width="500" height="333" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>Ladyhawke.</p>
<p> <a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/nevereverland/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/Whitest-Boy-Alive.jpg" alt="whitest boy alive" width="500" height="333" border="0" /></a></p>

<p>The Klaxons were a little more subdued, but a lot more polished than <a href="http://www.boudist.com/archive/2006/12/04/new_rave_comes_home.php">last time they were here</a>.</p>
<p><a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/nevereverland/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/Cut-Copy.jpg" alt="cut copy" width="500" height="333" border="0" /></a></p>

<p>Not so attractive festival go-ers.</p>

<p>Is it my imagination or did the whole &#8216;New Rave&#8217; movement start in Sydney? </p>
<p><a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/klaxons-nypc-modular/"><img src="http://www.boudist.com/images/new-young-pony-club-019.JPG" alt="New Young Pony Club" width="500" height="333" border="0" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://banggang.com.au/">Bang Gang</a>, <a href="http://www.modularpeople.com/">Modular Records</a>, <a href="http://www.thepresets.com">The Presets</a> and Tsubi (now Ksubi) are all Sydney institutions that were doing &#8216;New Rave&#8217; well before NME hopped on the wagon and made the term popular. But New Rave is really just another name for post-punk or electro-rock with glowsticks. Music genres are tired. Might as well coin a new one. </p>
<p>For more navel gazing on the topic see <a href="http://arts.guardian.co.uk/features/story/0,,1819479,00.html">The Guardian</a>, <a href="http://www.lifelounge.com/content/detail.aspx?id=1408">The Valentinos</a>, <a href="http://women.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,26491-2436281,00.html">The Times</a> and <a href="http://this.bigstereo.net/2006/10/09/new-rave/">The Big Stereo</a>. </p>
<p><a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/klaxons-nypc-modular/"><img src="http://www.boudist.com/images/the-ghosts-005.JPG" alt="The Ghosts" width="500" height="333" border="0" /></a><br />

<p>Whatever the case, fashionable young Sydneysiders turned out in force on Friday night for the Modular/Ksubi Christmas party. It featured the current king and queen of New Rave: <a href="http://www.myspace.com/klaxons">Klaxons</a> and <a href="http://www.myspace.com/newyoungponyclub">New Young Pony Club</a> from the UK. Also on the bill was <a href="http://www.myspace.com/vanshe">Van She</a> plus young upstarts <a href="http://www.myspace.com/theghostsms">The Ghosts</a> and not so young upstarts <a href="http://www.myspace.com/vendettasrock">Vendettas</a>.</p>
<p><a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/klaxons-nypc-modular/"><img src="http://www.boudist.com/images/new-young-pony-club-022.JPG" alt="New Young Pony Club" width="500" height="333" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>I&#8217;m no writer, so i shan&#8217;t bother reviewing the gig. But i did take <a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/klaxons-nypc-modular/">lots of photos</a>. <a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/klaxons-nypc-modular/"><img src="http://www.boudist.com/images/new-young-pony-club-018.JPG" alt="New Young Pony Club" width="500" height="750" border="0" /></a></p>

<p>I braved the road blocks and bad beach vibes to head to Bondi on Sunday arvo for a <a href="http://www.modularpeople.com">Modular records</a> party. It featured their major acts: Wolfmother, Cut Copy, The Presets, Van She and the Avalanches (still in DJ mode).</p>
<p>In a fashion i&#8217;ve come to expect Wolfmother were head-bangingly brilliant and Cut Copy were bootyshakingly boppin. Cut Copy ended up with an all-star jam featuring various members of Wolfmother and The Presets. It was at that moment i wandered up onto the stage to take a few snaps. Nice view from up there.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/wolfmother-cutcopy/"><img src="http://www.boudist.com/images/cut-copy-bondi.jpg" alt="Cut Copy" width="500" height="333" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>I was taking photos for <a href="http://threedworld.com.au/">3D World</a> which you can also see in my <a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/wolfmother-cutcopy/">mega Modular-Tsubi Bondi Party gallery</a>.</p>
