Before the MTV Awards kicked off i was stationed backstage in the ‘Transit Lounge’ where guests mingled before the show.

Brandon Flowers and Craig Nicholls were having a friendly chat after walking the red carpet.

MTV Australia Awards 2009 : The Presenters

As well as shooting the live performances at the MTV Awards i was turning around shooting the presenters and award winners at the podium.

The show was hosted by the diminutive Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy who’d i’d photographed not long ago for XBox.

One of the surprises of the night was when his wife and mother of his newborn child, Ashlee Simpson turned up. They weren’t shy of public displays of affection.

Welsh singer Duffy presented an award.

MTV Australia Awards 2009 : The Performances

A couple of weekends ago i was part of the crew from Blue Murder Studios photographing the Vodafone MTV Australia Awards for MTV.

It’s a good gig to get because it’s much better access than the usual red carpet and media room frenzy. I thankfully managed to avoid both those places.

It means getting to shoot the actual show, which few photographers are allowed to do.

Because it’s made for TV the production values are high, lots of light, pyrotechnics and showmanship. On the flipside, because it’s all designed for TV it’s often hard to shoot. There’s no photo pit as such, that’s filled with tracks for the video cameras. So i’m glued to one spot at an awkward angle, dodging video crews and explosions.

Kaiser Chiefs performed Never Miss a Beat amidst the pyrotechnics.

The Fray got all ballady.

Jessica Mauboy appeared to be rather Beyonce inspired for her performance.

Shooting the awards also meant i’m probably one of the few people to shoot The Killers live in recent memory. They don’t allow press photographers in to their shows and photographers are banned from shooting them at festival appearances too.

Wolfmother debuted their new single Back Round to close the show.

Ruby Rose cover shoot

The new issue of Time Out Sydney is out today featuring a cover story i photographed with MTV host Ruby Rose.

We shot it a couple of weeks ago in a brief morning shoot at Blue Murder Studios.

Some of the references i was considering were a Terry Richardson-esque punchy cover like the GQ one, or a more cheeky vintage Playboy one.

Here’s a couple more shots that didn’t end up making the cut.

One80 Project finalist screening

On February 1st i photographed the Optus One80 Project finalist screenings. The One80 Project is a film/tv making competition where you create a 180 second pilot of TV drama series. The winning pilot is then greenlit into production by MTV.

The finalist screening was a lovely evening held in Harmony Park Surry Hills. It’s all open to the public with free food, booze and entertainment courtesy of N’Fa and Bob Evans.

The competition was judged by previous winner Ben Briand, actors Sibylla Budd, Marcus Graham and Teresa Palmer plus Michael Selwyn, MD of Paramount Pictures Australia.

Teresa Palmer seemed to be the ‘it’ girl of the evening. She recently appeared in the Adam Sandler kids film Bedroom Stories and has been tabloid fodder because of a string of boyfriends including Russell Brand, Adam Brody and Topher Grace.

The judges choice was Wauchope and the viewers choice was Staying.

I took some photos at the MTV Australia Awards at Australian Technology Park in Redfern on April 26th. I was working with Cybele shooting for MTV so had pretty sweet access.

MTV Australia Video Music Awards

I photographed the MTV Australia Video Music Awards at Acer Arena on Sunday night.

It was an elaborate affair with big name attendees like Fergie, Pink, Good Charlotte, 30 Seconds to Mars, Nicole Richie and a host of Australian bands and b-grade ‘celebrities’.

Despite the big names, taking pictures at an event like this is decidedly unfulfilling. The photographers are cordoned off into an area to take photos as people arrive. The celebrities are ushered in front of a wall of MTV logos and the scrum of dozens of paparazzi style photographers goes mental, snapping away and barking instructions to look in their direction.

After everyone’s arrival on the red carpet it’s backstage to the media room where you end up waiting around for long periods of time until the talent arrives, posing with their award, the photographers shoot wildly for a burst until the talent leaves and calm and boredom sets in again.

It’s creatively unfulfilling because you’re essentially getting the exact same photo as every other snapper there and it’s all so tightly stage managed.

Despite all my complaining, it is something i’d do again. And i will be in a couple of weeks at the Jack Awards.
