<p>I love New York so much. Every time i visit i have the most awesome time and meet so many great people. One of these days i&#8217;ll get off my arse and move over there.</p>
<p><a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/Excursions/usa-2007/new-york/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/new-york-2340.JPG" border="0" alt="Grace jumps" /></a><a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/Excursions/usa-2007/new-york/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/new-york-2024.JPG" border="0" alt="Loft party" /></a></p>
<p>After the R&amp;R of Vegas New York was back to more partying. Lots of late nights and lock ins.</p>
<p><a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/Excursions/usa-2007/new-york/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/new-york-2385.JPG" border="0" alt="Grace" /></a><br />

<p>Now i promise no more travel pics from months past. That puts an end to <a href="http://www.boudist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-search.cgi?tag=usa2007&amp;blog_id=1">posts about my American adventure</a>.</p>

<p>No it&#8217;s not the name of a horror film, <a href="http://www.myspace.com/cutoffyourhands">Cut Off Your Hands</a> are band from New Zealand who i hung out with in New York.</p>
<p>I first met them by chance over take away pizza late one night in Austin.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.boudist.com/images/cut-off-your-hands-13.JPG" alt="Pizza Austin Cut Off Your Hands" border="0" /></p>
<p>
I didn&#8217;t manage to catch them play at SXSW amongst the myriad of other things to see and do.
</p>
<p>
On my first day in New York i kept spotting so many great photo opportunities for band photos, so i was itching to do something. All the Australian bands i knew had already left town, so when i heard Cut Off Your Hands were playing at <a href="http://www.pianosnyc.com/">Pianos</a> i ventured over with my pal Grace.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.boudist.com/images/cut-off-your-hands-1.JPG" alt="Cut Off Your Hands Pianos" border="0" /></p>
<p>
Sure enough, they needed little coaxing when i offered to take some pictures of them the next day.
</p>
<p><img src="http://www.boudist.com/images/cut-off-your-hands-4.JPG" alt="Cut Off Your Hands" border="0" /></p>
<p>
The plan was to meet at <a href="http://www.moma.org/">MOMA</a> at 5 and go from there, but due to numerous stuff ups we didn&#8217;t end up meeting till 7. By that time it was dark and they had less than an hour until they needed to be at Piano&#8217;s for another gig.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.boudist.com/images/cut-off-your-hands-6.JPG" alt="Cut Off Your Hands" border="0" /></p>
<p>
Necessity being the mother of invention i took them to Times Square, the only place i could think of with enough reflected light to take photos outdoors.
</p>
<p><img src="http://www.boudist.com/images/cut-off-your-hands-8.JPG" alt="Cut Off Your Hands" border="0" /></p>
<p>
After that we hopped on the subway down to the venue where i took a few more shots in Ludlow St.
</p>
<p>    <img src="http://www.boudist.com/images/new-york-1969.JPG" alt="Cut Off Your Hands" border="0" /></p>
<p>After seeing them twice in two days i saw them play again on my third night at a loft party in the Lower East Side. Nick the singer did his usual antics of climbing onto anything he could think of. I&#8217;m not sure the New Yorkers knew what to make of it, but it sure was entertaining. Even for the third time in as many nights. </p>
<p>

<p>I&#8217;m leaving today.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s been a wild ride these past few weeks. San Francisco, Austin, Las Vegas, New York. It feels like i&#8217;ve been away so long, yet when i get home i know it&#8217;ll soon feel like i never left.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.boudist.com/images/new-york-2374.JPG" alt="new york" border="0" /></p>
<p>The bat cave where i&#8217;ve been residing with the gentlemanly Jamie and divine Deborah. They are most gracious hosts. </p>
<p><img src="http://www.boudist.com/images/new-york-2468.JPG" alt="new york" border="0" />  </p>
<p>Last night i met up with <a href="http://www.flickr.com/people/blahblahblah/">Dockmaster</a> and <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/hog/">Hog</a>. They took me on a bar crawl through Brooklyn. They introduced me to this gambling dice game. This shot was taken after Dockmaster rolled a perfect score and took all my money. </p>
<p><img src="http://www.boudist.com/images/new-york-2430.JPG" alt="new york" border="0" />  </p>
<p>Grace and Nick at Artland on another night spent up to the wee hours.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.boudist.com/images/new-york-1971-edit.JPG" alt="new york" border="0" />  </p>
<p><a href="http://www.myspace.com/cutoffyourhands">Cut Off Your Hands</a> outside <a href="http://www.pianosnyc.com/">Pianos</a> where they played two nights in a row. I took more photos of them which i&#8217;ll post later. </p>
<p><img src="http://www.boudist.com/images/new-york-2052.JPG" alt="new york" border="0" /></p>
<p>Cut Off Your Hands playing at a loft party on the Lower East Side. So many trendy New Yorkers here i felt like i&#8217;d walked into <a href="http://www.lastnightsparty.com/">Last Nights Party</a>. </p>
<p>
<img src="http://www.boudist.com/images/new-york-2380.JPG" alt="new york" border="0" /></p>
<p>I was on the subway several times a day. Fascinating people watching. </p>
<p>More pictures to come. </p>
<p>I have to pack my bags and catch a plane. </p>
<p>After flying to LA and getting another flight to Sydney i&#8217;ll arrive at 6am on Saturday. After a brief rest and reunion with <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/cybele_malinowski/">Cybele</a> it&#8217;ll be off to <a href="http://vfestival.com.au/">V Festival</a> for more picture taking. </p>

<p>5 years ago today i was in London. That afternoon I was in a Starbucks reading by a window overlooking Tottenham Court Rd. About 4pm i started to notice agitated people hurriedly hopping on crammed buses. I thought it was rush hour hitting early and didn&#8217;t think much of it. I ambled across the road to the internet cafe where news of the attacks on New York was the lead story on every website i looked at. My one friend in New York had thankfully already emailed to say crazy shit was happening but she was ok. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/dreadfuldan/56502424/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.flickr.com/24/56502424_118c3cf7c9.jpg" alt="New York City's Finest" width="500" height="333" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>I called my sister (who was also in London) and arranged to meet up. We spent the evening in the pub amongst dozens of others in dumbstruck silence, glued to BBC World news. The next morning i awoke after spending most of the night watching the news in a daze of incomprehension about what happened. It&#8217;s still incomprehensible. I&#8217;m sure everyone remembers where they were when those events unfolded.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/dreadfuldan/51592599/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.flickr.com/25/51592599_846d50d674.jpg" alt="Skyscrapers abstracted" width="500" height="333" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>Apart from my home of Sydney, New York is my favourite city in the world. I&#8217;ve been there twice, pre September 11 and again last year. Apart from my visits i feel like i know it through the endless movies, music and other pop culture i&#8217;ve consumed in my life. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/Excursions/euro-usa-2005/new-york/IMG_3081.jpg.html"><img src="http://www.boudist.com/images/ny-.jpg" alt="New York - still under threat" width="500" height="375" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>The city gives me hope for the future. It&#8217;s a metropolis of people, from all walks of life, rich and poor and every culture and religion under the sun. And it works. Not perfectly, but in a way that makes me think that throwing together all those people in one place can be harmonious. Which is why it still breaks my heart that it was attacked. To me, New York still stands tall as our great hope for a peaceful future. </p>
