It was in the corridor of the Sydney Theatre Company, where Leanna is appearing in Stockholm.

Serious thespian Hugo Weaving

Here’s some snaps of the superb actor Hugo Weaving. It was a last minute affair, i only found out i was getting a photo opp with him 20 minutes before the shoot.

They were taken in a minute i had in a hotel room while he was on a junket for Wolfman. No time for any fancy set up, but he’s got such a great face, a straight portrait works okay.

Having photographed Wolfmother countless times onstage it was nice to get the opportunity to photograph frontman Andrew Stockdale face to face.

It was for a feature in Time Out Sydney on various Modular artists.

Andrew said this was a move Jack Ladder and Kirin Callinan would do on tour to psyche themselves up before going onstage

The shots on white were taken at my place with an idea for a composite cover with other artists. That didn’t end up working out.

After doing the studio shots we wandered round the corner to Jackson’s Rare Guitars for a few photos with some vintage guitars and amps.

And finally, here’s Cybele rocking out before Andrew arrived.

Back in August i had Cloud Control in the studio, and after doing some band photos i thought it would be fun to experiment a little at the end of the session.

I singled out lead singer Alister and asked the make up artist to draw a lightning bolt over his face, like David Bowie’s classic Aladdin Sane album cover.

It’s an homage that’s been paid time and again – from Kate Moss to Lady Gaga.

Vittorio Bianchi at Piccolo Bar

Vittorio Bianchi and the Piccolo Bar are what you’d call “Kings Cross institutions”.

In the folklore of Kings Cross, Vittorio is as much of an icon as the Coke sign, the fountain, Porky’s or the Bourbon and Beefsteak.

In an area that has changed so much, Vittorio and the cafe he runs have remained constant for about 50 years.

I shot these quick snaps on an impromptu visit a few months ago.

He’s quite a character, feigning shyness one moment, being a prima donna the next. Obsessed with celebrities and his own notoriety. Wickedly funny and full of beans.

Griffin Theatre 30th Anniversary

These are some portraits i took of various people involved with the Griffin Theatre Company over the past 30 years.

I was commissioned by Foxtel who were filming a video piece at the same time.

The shoot coincided with the day Griffin were throwing a street party for the 30th anniversary and kickstarting a fundraising initiative for renovations.

I had a little office set up with a red curtain and would ferry people in to have their picture snapped.

I hired a ring flash for the occasion, the first time i’ve ever used one. It’s a lighting technique i’ve always loved – it reminds me of magazine portraits in the 90’s that photographer Rankin made his signature style.

The people i was photographing were predominantly, writers and directors. Behind-the-scenes types uncomfortable in front of the lens. So i brought along some props – balloons and confetti for the 30th birthday theme.

The other thing i did to try and make people comfortable was asking them to tell me a story – so i could capture them in conversation.

Photographing Amanda Lepore

Here’s some photos from a brief shoot i had on Friday with famous New York transexual Amanda Lepore for Time Out Sydney. Amanda was in town to launch a new gay club night.

This was a pretty intimidating and exciting shoot for me, not because of Amanda Lepore per se, but for the fact that she was/is David LaChapelle’s muse and subject of so many of his photographs.

While i don’t ape his style, it was discovering his work over ten years ago that first made me open my eyes to how amazing photography could be and planted the seeds of my obsession with the craft.

With Amanda i just had a brief window of time to shoot after an interview and it had to be done at the Sheraton on the Park where she was staying.

I’ve shot there before and know the walls are pretty bland, so in a technique i picked up from Cybele, i brought my own wall in the form of some strips of vintage wallpaper.

It’s a simple thing, but adds more character to a shot than a plain cream wall.

Those shots were over so quick there was a bit more time to move into a corner with a grand piano for some more pictures.

There was also some spherical lamps which were cool looking, so i got her to hold one for a couple of frames.

It was all done in about 10 minutes.

Kenneth Kvarnström at Sydney Dance Company

While i’m posting dance related photos, here’s some portraits i took of Kenneth Kvarnström for Time Out Sydney. Kenneth is a Finnish choreographer who is creating a new work for the Sydney Dance Company called Mercury.

We started in a workshop backstage where the outifts are made, and Kenneth immediately impressed with his dexterous posing.

With such a nimble pose i thought it deserved a cleaner simpler backdrop so we found a white wall. And that then inspired to have some fun with shadow puppets.

Kenneth Kvarnström’s Mercury opens 17th November.

SPOD gets wet

Some photos of Sydney’s favourite freaky son, Spod.

These were taken a couple of months ago for Kluster to coincide with Spod’s Fantasyze project.

Fantasyze is a series of 9 podcasts of music – all mixed and composed to accompany a jogging workout of about 30 minutes. A little bit like the Nike sponsored mixes by De La Soul and LCD Soundsystem.

A number of Spod’s mixes are collaborations with other people, like Johnny from Children Collide (aka The Fascinator) and Chris and Myles from Palace of Fire.

You can download the podcasts via iTunes or on the blog.
