General Pants Major Label band photos

Last month i took photos of three of the bands participating in General Pants Major Label intiative.

They were Made in Japan, Underlights and Guineafowl.

Like some other brands before them, General Pants is getting involved in the music scene and has started a record label to promote unsigned bands. They sign them up for one single and release that with all royalties going back to the band.

I was asked to shoot promo style shots of three of the acts while they were decked out in some clothes from General Pants.

I wanted some consistency across the different bands. So i had two set-ups that were the same – full band lined up on a white wall, then that same white wall, but lit with some coloured gels and playing with shadows.

After the studio photos i took each band for a wander to get some shots elsewhere.

Underlights

With Underlights we were taking some pictures outside a church in Darlinghurst. I was trying to keep everyone quiet because i feared if someone inside heard us we’d be shoo’d away.

Sure enough, an elderly gent poked his head out the door asking what we were doing. But rather than ask us to leave, he invited us inside.

So we took a couple of shots indoors too.

By the time Made in Japan got to the studio we were running out of time, so rather than leave the studio we just went to the roof for an open air shot.

Guineafowl

For Guineafowl we walked to a nearby children’s playground. By this time it was completely dark and i needed light. My lights need mains power, so we knocked on the door of a house near the park and asked the owner if they minded us borrowing their power for 5 minutes. They kindly agreed, and so there was light.

Empire of the Sun photos

During the filming of Empire of the Sun‘s video for Without You i took a few snaps of (Emperor) Luke Steele.

In the tradition of their previous publicity shots, they went through the Debaser illustration process to come out in this fantasy fashion.

One of the shots also made the single artwork cover.

Operator Please photos

Some pictures from December 2007 of Operator Please that i neglected to post at the time.

These were press photos, to refresh the previous photos i did.

This time they wanted something a little more sophisticated, less young and ‘cute’.

Some shots were done in the studio, with props i hired from Mitchell Road Auction Centre. The others were taken at the auction centre, in the goods lift and auction floor.

Catcall in a supermarket

Here’s some photos i took of Catcall and Levins (aka Sleater Brockman) the other week.

As i was trying to think of locations Danny North’s Fu*ked Up photo was fresh in my mind so i thought about a supermarket. Max|m supermarket let us take over an aisle for a little while.

The two of them are over in the US playing a bunch of shows together.

Ladyhawke

Here’s some snaps i took a few weeks ago of Pip Brown aka Ladyhawke.

We wandered the streets round the Modular offices looking for interesting backdrops. I just had a short amount of time in her day of doing back-to-back press and radio interviews. It was a typical rush.

I wish i’d coaxed more personality out of her. She looks uncharacteristically miserable. I blame myself for that. Not that i made her miserable, but it’s my job to tease more out of my subject.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock you’d know her debut album is out now. Pop gems galore.

Midnight Juggernauts photos

Here’s some of the finished photos from that shoot with Midnight Juggernauts in Centennial Park.

The band are riding high at the moment with a hectic touring schedule. As well as the North American tour they’re on now with Justice, they’re about to head to Europe and tour with Digitalism across the UK. They also appear to be playing all the Australian summer festivals. Dates on their website.

I did a photo shoot with Midnight Juggernauts on Thursday night. These are a couple of offcuts, i’ll post the proper shots later once they’re approved.

The elements were stacked against us.

We were shooting at night in the pitch black of Centennial Park without a permit.

The band were only available for a short window of time between their soundcheck and when they were due on stage.

To top it off, it started pouring with rain while we were outdoors in the park with expensive lights.

Not ideal conditions, but the band are such gentleman and remained in jovial spirits which kept us going.

In the end none of the gear was damaged, the band made their show on time and the shots worked out fine.

All’s well that ends well.

bluejuice have problems

My first album cover photo!

This is the cover art for bluejuice‘s debut album Problems. After being around for 6 years they’re finally releasing their debut album on the 11th August.

You may remember the photo when i first posted it.

I haven’t seen it myself yet, but i believe the rear CD art is the bottom half of the photo.

The band seem to have embraced being odd for this new album. The video for the first single Vitriol has them forming a cult and performing to a bemused Pitt St Mall crowd.

The song has been doing great for them, being the most played track on triple j last week.

It’s great to see it doing so well. I visited the band in the studio in May last year while they were recording it. It got stuck in my head after hearing it played over and over so many times and now it’s back.

bluejuice (who insist on lowercase spelling) start a tour of NSW, Victoria and Queensland this month. Dates on their myspace.

Operator Please press photos

Back in February i took press shots for Gold Coast band Operator Please.

It was such a fun shoot and the band were a pleasure to spend time with. They’re very young (aged between 16-18) and have that youthful energy and lack of pretention but they’re also very savvy and self aware. Talented musicians too – they know how to write a catchy song.

They’re hard at work touring the country at the moment. They play at Candy’s Apartment in Sydney tonight with many other cities to follow. After that they’re touring in support of The Kaiser Chiefs, then do it all again in support of Maximo Park. Then they play Leeds and Reading festival in the UK!
