<p>Last month i took photos of three of the bands participating in General Pants <a href="http://www.generalpants.com.au/Major-Label/Music.html?Page=1">Major Label</a> intiative.</p>
<p>They were <a href="http://madeinjapan.net.au/">Made in Japan</a>, <a href="http://www.myspace.com/underlightsband">Underlights</a> and <a href="http://www.myspace.com/guineafowl">Guineafowl</a>.</p>
<p><span id="more-6400"></span></p>
<p>Like some <a href="http://www.boudist.com/archive/2009/07/12/uncharted-2009-finals.php">other</a> <a href="http://www.boudist.com/archive/tag/levity">brands</a> before them, <a href="http://www.generalpants.com.au/">General Pants</a> is getting involved in the music scene and has started a <a href="http://www.generalpants.com.au/Major-Label/Music.html?Page=1">record label</a> to promote unsigned bands. They sign them up for one single and release that with all royalties going back to the band.</p>
<p>I was asked to shoot promo style shots of three of the acts while they were decked out in some clothes from General Pants.</p>
<div id="attachment_6465" class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width: 600px"><a href="http://www.boudist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/guineafowl-29-Edit.jpg"><img src="http://www.boudist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/guineafowl-29-Edit-590x884.jpg" alt="Guineafowl" title="Guineafowl" width="590" height="884" class="size-medium wp-image-6465" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Guineafowl</p></div>
<div id="attachment_6420" class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width: 600px"><a href="http://www.boudist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/underlights-16.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-6420" title="Underlights" src="http://www.boudist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/underlights-16-590x884.jpg" alt="Underlights" width="590" height="884" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Underlights</p></div>
<p>I wanted some consistency across the different bands. So i had two set-ups that were the same &#8211; full band lined up on a white wall, then that same white wall, but lit with some coloured gels and playing with shadows.</p>
<div id="attachment_6405" class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width: 600px"><a href="http://www.boudist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/guineafowl-26.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-6405" title="guineafowl-26" src="http://www.boudist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/guineafowl-26-590x393.jpg" alt="" width="590" height="393" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Guineafowl</p></div>
<div id="attachment_6421" class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width: 600px"><a href="http://www.boudist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/underlights-3.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-6421" title="Underlights" src="http://www.boudist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/underlights-3-590x884.jpg" alt="Underlights" width="590" height="884" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Underlights</p></div>
<div id="attachment_6410" class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width: 600px"><a href="http://www.boudist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/made-in-japan.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-6410" title="made-in-japan" src="http://www.boudist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/made-in-japan-590x393.jpg" alt="" width="590" height="393" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Made in Japan</p></div>
<p>After the <a href="http://www.luxestudios.com.au/">studio</a> photos i took each band for a wander to get some shots elsewhere.</p>
<div id="attachment_6417" class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width: 600px"><a href="http://www.boudist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/underlights-27.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-6417" title="Underlights" src="http://www.boudist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/underlights-27-590x393.jpg" alt="Underlights" width="590" height="393" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Underlights</p></div>
<p>With Underlights we were taking some pictures outside a church in Darlinghurst. I was trying to keep everyone quiet because i feared if someone inside heard  us we&#8217;d be shoo&#8217;d away.</p>
<p>Sure enough, an elderly gent poked his head out the door asking what we were doing. But rather than ask us to leave, he invited us inside.</p>
<p>So we took a couple of shots indoors too.</p>
<div id="attachment_6415" class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width: 600px"><a href="http://www.boudist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/underlights-33.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-6415" title="underlights-33" src="http://www.boudist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/underlights-33-590x393.jpg" alt="Underlights" width="590" height="393" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Underlights</p></div>
<div id="attachment_6407" class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width: 600px"><a href="http://www.boudist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/made-in-japan-32.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-6407" title="Made in Japan" src="http://www.boudist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/made-in-japan-32-590x884.jpg" alt="Made in Japan" width="590" height="884" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Made in Japan</p></div>
<p>By the time Made in Japan got to the studio we were running out of time, so rather than leave the studio we just went to the roof for an open air shot.</p>
<div id="attachment_6402" class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width: 600px"><a href="http://www.boudist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/guineafowl-56.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-6402" title="Guineafowl" src="http://www.boudist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/guineafowl-56-590x393.jpg" alt="Guineafowl" width="590" height="393" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Guineafowl</p></div>
<p>For Guineafowl we walked to a nearby children&#8217;s playground. By this time it was completely dark and i needed light.  My lights need mains power, so we knocked on the door of a house near the park and asked the owner if they minded us borrowing their power for 5 minutes. They kindly agreed, and so there was light.</p>
<p>You can see the photos mixed with some other photos i took that day on the <a href="http://www.generalpants.com.au/Lookbook/Stay-Warm.html">General Pants website</a>.</p>

<p>We wandered the streets round the <a href="http://www.modularpeople.com/">Modular</a> offices looking for interesting backdrops. I just had a short amount of time in her day of doing back-to-back press and radio interviews. It was a typical rush.</p>
<p><img src="http://boudist.com/images/ladyhawke-15.jpg" height="750" width="500" alt="Ladyhawke" /></p>
<p>I wish i&#8217;d coaxed more personality out of her. She looks uncharacteristically miserable. I blame myself for that. Not that i made her miserable, but it&#8217;s my job to tease more out of my subject.</p>
<p><img src="http://boudist.com/images/ladyhawke-16.jpg" height="750" width="500" alt="Ladyhawke" /></p>
<p>Unless you&#8217;ve been living under a rock you&#8217;d know her <a href="http://www.modularpeople.com/blog/?p=293">debut album is out now</a>. Pop gems galore.</p>

<p>I did a photo shoot with <a href="http://www.midnightjuggernauts.com/">Midnight Juggernauts</a> on Thursday night. These are a couple of offcuts, i&#8217;ll post the proper shots later once they&#8217;re approved.</p>
<p>The elements were stacked against us.</p>
<p>We were shooting at night in the pitch black of Centennial Park without a permit.</p>
<p>The band were only available for a short window of time between their soundcheck and when they were due on stage.</p>
<p>To top it off, it started pouring with rain while we were outdoors in the park with expensive lights.</p>
<p>Not ideal conditions, but the band are such gentleman and remained in jovial spirits which kept us going. </p>
<p>In the end none of the gear was damaged, the band made their show on time and the shots worked out fine. </p>
<p>All&#8217;s well that ends well.</p>

<p>My first album cover photo!</p>
<p>This is the cover art for <a href="http://www.myspace.com/bluejuice">bluejuice</a>&#8216;s debut album <em>Problems</em>. After being around for 6 years they&#8217;re finally releasing their debut album on the 11th August.</p>
<p>You may remember the photo when <a href="http://www.boudist.com/archive/2007/01/17/bluejuice_photos.php">i first posted it</a>.</p>
<p><img src="http://boudist.com/images/bluejuice_6936.JPG" alt="Bluejuice" width="499" height="750" /></p>
<p>I haven&#8217;t seen it myself yet, but i believe the rear CD art is the bottom half of the photo.</p>
<p>The band seem to have embraced being odd for this new album. The video for the first single <em>Vitriol</em> has them forming a cult and performing to a bemused Pitt St Mall crowd.</p>
<p><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ldBhDmvWFXE"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ldBhDmvWFXE" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object></p>
<p>The song has been doing great for them, being the <a href="http://www.jplay.com.au/JSite/">most played</a> track on <a href="http://triplej.net.au/">triple j</a> last week.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s great to see it doing so well. I <a href="http://www.boudist.com/archive/2006/05/05/bluejuice_recording.php">visited the band in the studio</a> in May last year while they were recording it. It got stuck in my head after hearing it played over and over so many times and now it&#8217;s back.</p>
<p> <a href="http://whothehell.net/wp-content/uploads/2007/07/vitriol.mp3">Download <em>Vitriol</em></a> (mp3 via <a href="http://whothehell.net/archives/973">whothehell.net</a>).</p>
<p><img src="http://boudist.com/images/bluejuice-048.JPG" alt="bluejuice in the recording studio" width="500" height="333" /></p>
<p>bluejuice (who insist on lowercase spelling) start a tour of NSW, Victoria and Queensland this month. <a href="http://www.myspace.com/bluejuice">Dates on their myspace</a>. </p>
<p>Check out how strange they are in the flesh.</p>

<p>It was such a fun shoot and the band were a pleasure to spend time with. They&#8217;re very young (aged between 16-18) and have that youthful energy and lack of pretention but they&#8217;re also very savvy and self aware. Talented musicians too &#8211; they know how to write a catchy song.</p>
<p><img src="http://boudist.com/images/op_5901.JPG" alt="Operator Please" border="0" /></p>
<p>They&#8217;re hard at work touring the country at the moment. They play at Candy&#8217;s Apartment in Sydney tonight with many other cities to follow. After that they&#8217;re touring in support of The Kaiser Chiefs, then do it all again in support of Maximo Park. Then they play Leeds and Reading festival in the UK! </p>
<p><a href="http://www.operatorpleaseband.com/tours/">Dates are on their website. </a></p>
<p>Busy little bees they are. </p>
