Here’s my photos from the Homebake festival on Saturday.

Lovely day out as usual, and this year marked the fifth time i’ve photographed Homebake.

It was the first festival i ever photographed with proper accreditation. Thanks Sonia for sorting out that pass all those years ago.

Red Riders at The Metro 2007

Red Riders are one of those acts i’ve admired and followed since they appeared on the Sydney scene circa 2004.

This week they release their second album, so i thought it an opportune time to take a trip down memory lane.

Like other acts that emerged in that era (eg, Wolfmother, Children Collide, The Scare) they’ve come under the attention of my lens too many times to mention.

First when i was a keen amateur photoblogger with a pocket camera, till now, an older more jaded snapper still occasionally shooting live music.

I first saw the band in July 2004 at the opening night of Spectrum, a venue that’s now part of the fabric of the Sydney music scene.

Soon after that they scored the opening slot for Franz Ferdinand at The Metro. A role they repeated this year at The Enmore.

They’ve overcome the loss of one of their founding members to release their second album this week, Drown in Colour.

FBi Radio fundraising gigs

As Sydney music fans would know by now, FBi Radio is on a fundraising blitz to raise funds to keep them on air.

As well as the Ask Richard campaign they’re throwing a massive series of gigs this month with all proceeds going to FBi.

There’s some fantastic line ups, well worth parting with your hard earned dollars for.

To commemorate such a momentous co-operative event FBi thought it appropriate to document in a big group photo.

Almost 80 musicians from Sydney bands taking part in the festivities assembled at Carriageworks. The first set up was challenging trying to fit everyone in, but i just about managed it.

It was a bit strange, parading myself in front of everyone, barking instructions.

The next set up i decided to do a really long photo, inspired partly by this photo by Garry Trinh of people queuing for The Strokes tickets.

I had everyone stand in line together and hold hands with the person next to them. The hand holding was to signify unity, but mainly as a way to loosen people up. They’d be made so uncomfortable by holding a strangers hand that they’d relax a bit for the picture.

Franz Ferdinand in Sydney

Straight off the plane from Fiji, sunburnt and dog-bitten, i made my way to the Enmore Theatre for Franz Ferdinand.

It was like 2004 all over again with Red Riders in support. It was the debut show of new guitarist, Brad Heald of The Vines. I guess he’s got time on his hands after The Vines indefinite hiatus.

Middle support was The Temper Trap who i think are rather awesome. Their live show expanded the four piece into six piece and sounded pretty amazing. They’ve conquered the local airwaves, getting a flogging for Sweet Disposition on Triple J and commercial radio and look set to do the same in the UK with the BBC and XFM both naming the band as ones to watch in 2009. The Aussie hype band of 2009.

And then it was the main event with Franz Ferdinand. I was a little unsure how they’d go down after being quiet for so long, but as soon as they strode on with confidence and charisma they had the crowd on side. Playing sing-a-long Do You Want To second song was an inspired move.

I’d tell you how the rest of the show was too but us photographers get turfed out after 3 songs.

On another Franz Ferdinand note, the artwork for their new album is pretty cool. It’s all Weegee inspired, shot in black and white and looking like crime scenes. On their blog Alex Kapranos writes,

“The photograph was taken by Soren Starbird by the side of the Barras in Glasgow. We’re shooting a series with photographers we like in different cities we end up in. The Ulysses cover was taken in Brooklyn by Guy Eppel and we were in Paris and Warsaw with Youri Lenquette and Joe Dilworth recently. They’re shot as imaginary crime scenes, invaded by the photographer. A slice of night frozen by flash.”

Clever idea and some great photographers. Nice to see a band come up with a creative concept for their photos. Would’ve been nice to do a Sydney one.

Dappled Cities Fly and Red Riders tour photos

Last week Dappled Cities Fly and Red Riders co-headlined a sold out show at The Metro in Sydney. I took pictures.

It was quite an occasion, one which marks a high point in the rise of each band.

Sydney bands tend to start their lives by playing a gig at a smallish venue like The Excelsior or The Hopetoun, if they graduate from that they may play at Spectrum, Candys or The Annandale. The next step might be The Gaelic Club and if they’ve really got things going for them, The Metro.

After that it’s a game of diminishing returns. If you move on to The Enmore or the Hordern Pavillion or even the Entertainment Centre, it’s not so fun to watch anymore. The Metro holds about a thousand people, which is about the biggest size to still feel intimate and comfortable. It’s a well designed room which has seen some incredible gigs in it’s time.

Once a band can sell out The Metro it’s a bit of a hallmark moment in their career. And so it was for Sydney bands Dappled Cities and Red Riders.

After triumphant sets, both bands came back on stage to cover Guns’n'Roses November Rain. It was awesome. Sean has video.

I’m not sure what’s next for Red Riders, but Dappled Cities are soon to migrate to the US. They’ve got support tours lined up with Tokyo Police Club and The Fratellis. Exciting times.

Not to be forgotten was fabulous supporting act Belles Will Ring. They’re about to embark on their own tour soon.

Homebake 2006 – Part 3

And the third and final installment of Homebake photos. It was Silverchair’s year to headline, playing some of their classics as well as a number of songs off their coming album Young Modern.

Surprisingly The Vines were one of my highlights of the festival. Craig seems to be really enjoying himself onstage these days, not like the tortured soul of years gone by.

Come Together Festival – Day 2

Only 3 months late i’m posting some live photos of day 2 of the Come Together Festival from June 11 2006.

The first day, which concentrated on the heavier acts was completely sold out, but the Sunday, which featured many more acts that i know and love wasn’t so popular. Tis a shame, since it’s a great little mini festival, I hope they keep it up.

The photos are pretty ordinary, that’s why they’ve sat on my hard drive so long.

But the day did yield one nice shot in particular though, of Adrian Red Riders above. That little snap did me proud on the cover of Mess and Noise and plastered on the website, plus it was one of the prints that sold at 3 Songs. No Flash.

Howling Bells, Red Riders and Sparkadia

Here’s some pictures of Howling Bells show last night at The Annandale. After moving to the UK it was a triumphant homecoming for the band formerly known as Waikiki. The show sold out several days earlier and expectations were high.

It’s amazing what a good rap from NME and airplay on the OC will do for a band. It wasn’t that long ago i recall them playing a month long residency at Spectrum that didn’t get much attention. But it helps their album is really rather good. And they have such a spunky frontwoman. Have a listen to Setting Sun (mp3) and check out their website.

The support acts were top notch too, my old faves Sparkadia emerged from hibernation in their new three piece formation. They’ve also got the plum Death Cab for Cutie support slot next weekend.

Red Riders also impressed as usual with their polished pop.

The show also provided a good opportunity to test out the Canon 85mm f1.8 lens that i bought that day.

I’m rather overdue posting my photos from Rebel Rebel over a week ago when Louis XIV played with Red Riders.

There’s also now an official Rebel Rebel photo gallery which i set up. It contains photos from every week – not just my shots.

Can someone design-savvy do me a favour please? The current header image (the text that says PHOTO GALLERY) on that page looks rather crap – i couldn’t get the text to anti-alias properly. If someone has the font called Confidential and a copy of Photoshop and can make the font look more like the other headings on the Rebel Rebel site (ie not all jagged like) that would be most helpful. This photoshop file might help. Email me if you work it out.

I knew you guys would come through. Thank you to Olivia for offering to help if i could get her the font, Miriam for giving me the mac font, Tabatha for working out a clever way to do it online, and finally James for putting all the pieces together and giving me the improved .psd that i ended up using. Y’all are the best
