It was presented by Kirin and Ksubi and featured several Japanese performance artists.

All very odd, very fashionable, very Japanese.

Here’s some snaps from the opening night party for fashion label Romance Was Born‘s first ever retail shop.

It’s a ‘concept store’ in Paddington called Pearl’s Dream and is open for a couple of months until January 31st.

It features many of the items they launched at their stunning show at Australian Fashion Week this year.

The store was officially opened by Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson. A fitting pair to christen the space as it harkens back to the Flamingo Park ‘frock salon’ they opened in Sydney in the 1970s. Romance Was Born’s work is in the same vein too; bold and colourful with an unabashed love for Australiana.

The shop is next door to Romance Was Born’s SOYA mentors Zimmerman in Paddington – at 2A Glenmore Rd.

Here’s what the press release states:

Romance Was Born: “Pearl’s Dream” Concept Store
“The intersection” 2A Glenmore Road, Paddington
26th November 2009 – 31st January 2010

“Pearls Dream” continues on from the “Doilies and Pearls, Oysters and Shells” SS0910 collection. It is a concept store which celebrates the collection and its collaborators.

“We feel so lucky to work with the people we do and Pearl’s Dream encaptulates our full Romance aesthetic. Its about creating our world for the outside world to experience”. Romance Was Born

“Doilies and Pearls, Oysters and Shells” features collaborative works by two Australian artists, Patrick Doherty and Indigenious shell worker Esme Timbery, and also jewellery by Romance Was Born’s accessories designer Paul Bonomelli.

Pearl’s Dream is Romance Was Born’s tribute to the stylish elegance of Grandmas and the olden days whilst exploring their fascination with the sea; that crystalline underwater world where mermaids are the keepers of its mysterious watery secrets. Romance Was Born open up nanna’s glory box worn by the tides of time to reveal long forgotten treasures – glorious old jewels, budgies in a cage, 4711, a fine bone china tea set with a mother-of-pearl glaze, delicately aged lace doilies and other assorted goodies from a bygone era.

Artisan Guild and Curiosity Shop

Following the trend for pop up shops, the Artisan Guild and Curiosity Shop has just opened on Oxford St Darlinghurst.

Running till the end of July it’s curated by the local mens shoe label Marsu Homme and selling the wares of many of Sydney’s finest artisans including St Augustine Academy, Matt Weston, Elke Kramer, Izrock Pressings, Luke Storrier, All of Our Lives and many more.

I know diddly about fashion, but i was at the shop snapping pictures of all those that do on the opening night last Thursday.

One80 Project finalist screening

On February 1st i photographed the Optus One80 Project finalist screenings. The One80 Project is a film/tv making competition where you create a 180 second pilot of TV drama series. The winning pilot is then greenlit into production by MTV.

The finalist screening was a lovely evening held in Harmony Park Surry Hills. It’s all open to the public with free food, booze and entertainment courtesy of N’Fa and Bob Evans.

The competition was judged by previous winner Ben Briand, actors Sibylla Budd, Marcus Graham and Teresa Palmer plus Michael Selwyn, MD of Paramount Pictures Australia.

Teresa Palmer seemed to be the ‘it’ girl of the evening. She recently appeared in the Adam Sandler kids film Bedroom Stories and has been tabloid fodder because of a string of boyfriends including Russell Brand, Adam Brody and Topher Grace.

The judges choice was Wauchope and the viewers choice was Staying.

The Andrew G swirly light trick

These are some photos from Moon Bar on the rooftop of the Banyan Tree hotel in Bangkok. The effect with the lights is a simple technique that i learned from Cybele who learned it from Andrew G while shooting a party at Harry M Miller’s penthouse.

Using flash, simply set your shutter speed to about half a second and take your photo while spinning the camera in a circular fashion. Check my settings here.

You need to be in a location where there is lots of speckled light behind the subject, such as a rooftop at night with the city in the background.

This is what it looked like with the camera held still.

Lost Valentinos played, people danced, drank, pashed and looked fashionable.

Party photos galore

This weekend i’m part of a group gallery show of Purple Sneakers party photos.

It’s at China Heights on Saturday and Sunday afternoon featuring the work of Cybele Malinowski, Luke Austin, Ashley Mar, Vic Frankowski and me.

The opening night (not advertised on the flyer) is invite only but if you’d like to come along drop me a line and i’ll send you an invite.

It’s a pretty strange idea putting party snaps on display in a gallery. They’re very low brow art – intended to be glanced at on a website or in the social pages. But anything’s art once it’s hung on a wall. In a city filled with vanity and self obsession it makes sense.

Party photos have exploded in the past few years. There’s so many websites for them and pages of print dedicated to them. There’s obviously a huge appetite for them even though people love to slag them off.

I’ve assembled a directory of sorts of some the better party photo sites out there in Australia and the US.

There’s also the party photo section of my site, but i’ve been quiet on that front of late. Also i just finished building the photo gallery for Bad Kids Recreation Club. Photos aren’t by me, and there’s only one night’s worth so far, but watch it grow over the coming weeks.

I’m rather overdue posting my photos from Rebel Rebel over a week ago when Louis XIV played with Red Riders.

There’s also now an official Rebel Rebel photo gallery which i set up. It contains photos from every week – not just my shots.

Can someone design-savvy do me a favour please? The current header image (the text that says PHOTO GALLERY) on that page looks rather crap – i couldn’t get the text to anti-alias properly. If someone has the font called Confidential and a copy of Photoshop and can make the font look more like the other headings on the Rebel Rebel site (ie not all jagged like) that would be most helpful. This photoshop file might help. Email me if you work it out.

I knew you guys would come through. Thank you to Olivia for offering to help if i could get her the font, Miriam for giving me the mac font, Tabatha for working out a clever way to do it online, and finally James for putting all the pieces together and giving me the improved .psd that i ended up using. Y’all are the best
