<p>It was for a <a href="http://www.timeoutsydney.com.au/music/wolfmother.aspx">feature in Time Out Sydney</a> on various <a href="http://www.modularpeople.com">Modular</a> artists.</p>

<p>The shots on white were taken at my place with an idea for a composite cover with other artists. That didn&#8217;t end up working out.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.boudist.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/andrew-stockdale-wolfmother-41-Edit1.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4856" title="andrew-stockdale-wolfmother-41-Edit" src="http://www.boudist.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/andrew-stockdale-wolfmother-41-Edit1-590x884.jpg" alt="" width="590" height="884" /></a></p>
<p>After doing the studio shots we wandered round the corner to <a href="http://www.jacksonsrareguitars.com/">Jackson&#8217;s Rare Guitars</a> for a few photos with some vintage guitars and amps.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.boudist.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/andrew-stockdale-wolfmother-38-Edit1.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4857" title="andrew-stockdale-wolfmother-38-Edit" src="http://www.boudist.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/andrew-stockdale-wolfmother-38-Edit1-590x884.jpg" alt="" width="590" height="884" /></a></p>
<p>And finally, here&#8217;s <a href="http://bangbangdot.com">Cybele</a> rocking out before Andrew arrived.</p>

<p>A couple of weekends ago i was part of the crew from <a href="http://bluemurderstudios.com.au/">Blue Murder Studios</a> <a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/mtv-awards-2009/">photographing</a> the <a href="http://www.mtv.com.au/awards/">Vodafone MTV Australia Awards</a> for <a href="http://www.mtv.com.au/">MTV</a>. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s a good gig to get because it&#8217;s much better access than the usual red carpet and media room frenzy. I thankfully managed to avoid both those places.</p>
<p>It means getting to shoot the actual show, which few photographers are allowed to do. </p>
<p>Because it&#8217;s made for TV the production values are high, lots of light, pyrotechnics and showmanship. On the flipside, because it&#8217;s all designed for TV it&#8217;s often hard to shoot. There&#8217;s no photo pit as such, that&#8217;s filled with tracks for the video cameras. So i&#8217;m glued to one spot at an awkward angle, dodging video crews and explosions.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/mtv-awards-2009/performance/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/Kaiser-Chiefs-12.jpg" alt="Kaiser Chiefs" width="500" height="333" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>Kaiser Chiefs performed Never Miss a Beat amidst the pyrotechnics.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/mtv-awards-2009/performance/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/The-Fray-223.jpg" alt="The Fray" width="500" height="750" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>The Fray got all ballady.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/mtv-awards-2009/performance/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/Jessica-Mauboy-176.jpg" alt="Jessica Mauboy" width="500" height="333" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>Jessica Mauboy appeared to be rather Beyonce inspired for her performance.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/mtv-awards-2009/performance/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/The-Killers-135.jpg" alt="The Killers Brandon Flowers" width="500" height="333" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>Shooting the awards also meant i&#8217;m probably one of the few people to shoot The Killers live in recent memory. They <a href="http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/article/flowers%20defends%20decision%20to%20censor%20concert%20photos_1095652">don&#8217;t allow press photographers</a> in to their shows and <a href="http://www.boudist.com/archive/2007/02/01/the_killers_not_fond_of_photos.php">photographers are banned</a> from shooting them at festival appearances too.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/mtv-awards-2009/performance/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/Wolfmother-71.jpg" alt="Wolfmother" width="500" height="750" border="0" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.wolfmother.com/">Wolfmother</a> debuted their new single Back Round to close the show.</p>
<p>See more <a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/mtv-awards-2009/performance/">performance photos from the MTV Australia Awards</a>.</p>

<p>My Saturday was spent at <a href="http://www.soundrelief.com.au">Sound Relief</a> Sydney, snapping pictures, getting rained on and revelling in nostalgia.</p>
<p>The concert was held at the Sydney Cricket Ground in tandem with another concert at the Melbourne Cricket Ground with all proceeds going to benefit victims of the recent Victorian bushfires and Queensland floods.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/sound-relief-sydney/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/ColdplayDB02.jpg" border="0" alt="Chris Martin and John Farnham" width="500" height="333" /></a></p>
<p>The highlight of the whole day came early, during Coldplay&#8217;s opening set when they brought out John Farnham to sing You&#8217;re the Voice. It was pretty spine tingling to hear that song belted out with a whole stadium singing along.</p>
<p><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="425" height="344" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/RH0q91RUTyk&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/RH0q91RUTyk&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>
<p><a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/sound-relief-sydney/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/Coldplay-004.jpg" border="0" alt="Chris Martin" width="500" height="333" /></a></p>
<p>Coldplay followed that with Fix You and another thrilling moment when Chris Martin leapt off the stage and into the audience and sprinted to the back of the crowd. The <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HS5PIEmCAs#t=2m53s">Channel V footage</a> shows the chaos of it as the camera men struggle to work out where he&#8217;s gone.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/sound-relief-sydney/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/Wolfmother-sound-relief.jpg" border="0" alt="Wolfmother" width="500" height="333" /></a></p>
<p>Wolfmother II followed Coldplay, debuting the new band.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/sound-relief-sydney/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/TaylorSwiDB03.jpg" border="0" alt="Taylor Swift" width="500" height="333" /></a></p>
<p>Later in the afternoon Taylor Swift whipped the teens into a lather of Beatlemania style excitement. Girls were screaming and crying at the sight of her. Weird.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/sound-relief-sydney/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/SoundReliDB02.jpg" border="0" alt="Crowd" width="500" height="333" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/sound-relief-sydney/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/SoundReliDB01.jpg" border="0" alt="crowd during Jet" width="500" height="333" /></a></p>
<p>This was taken as Jet was playing Are You Gonna Be My Girl.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/sound-relief-sydney/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/Icehouse-142.jpg" border="0" alt="Iva Davies Icehouse" width="500" height="333" /></a></p>
<p>In another nod to nostalgia Icehouse performed in the early evening, running through their 80&#8242;s hits like Electric Blue and Great Southern Land.</p>
<p><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="425" height="344" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/v/_xYQBTwP3t0&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344" src="http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/v/_xYQBTwP3t0&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>
<p>To close the Sydney Sound Relief Concert we had a Beegee, in the form of Barry Gibb performing with Olivia Newton-John.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/sound-relief-sydney/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/BarryGibbDB03.jpg" border="0" alt="Barry Gibb Sound Relief" width="500" height="333" /></a></p>
<p>As impressive as the Beegees once were it was a strange choice of finale for the primarily young crowd.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/sound-relief-sydney/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/BarryGibbDB05.jpg" border="0" alt="Barry Gibb ONJ" width="500" height="333" /></a></p>

<p>Press release from Universal cut and pasted below:</p>
<blockquote>
<h3>Myles Heskett and Chris Ross to Depart Wolfmother</h3>
<p>
Grammy Award winning rock band Wolfmother has announced the resignation of bass/keyboard player Chris Ross and drummer Myles Heskett effective immediately.</p>
<p>Singer/guitarist Andrew Stockdale now plans to find other musicians over coming months and to then begin making a new Wolfmother album.</p>
<p>Wolfmother toured the world virtually non-stop through 2006 and early 2007 on the back of their acclaimed self titled debut album. Longstanding frictions within the group then lead them to take an extended break during the second half of 2007 to consider their future.</p>
<p>In early 2008 they regrouped and worked on new material. Initially encouraged by those sessions, they committed to a handful of live shows to &#8216;road test&#8217; the new songs and to try to find a way forward.</p>
<p>Those dates concluded with a headlining slot last Sunday at the Splendour In The Grass Festival in Australia&#8217;s Byron Bay where rumours circulated about possible lineup changes.</p>
<p>Following that show Chris Ross decided to announce that he was leaving the band due to irreconcilable personal and musical differences. Myles Heskett has also decided to leave the band rather than continuing as part of a changed lineup. The pair has been working together on songs for some time and they plan to focus their energies on that new project in the future.</p>
<p>Wolfmother&#8217;s self titled debut album is one of the most successful Australian rock releases this century. It has sold over 1.3 million copies and received multiple ARIA Awards and a Grammy &#8211; making them the first Aussie band to receive such an award in 25 years. Other highlights for the group have included appearances at just about every major music festival in the world, sharing stages with Pearl Jam, The Who and The Strokes, and a special performance inducting the legendary Led Zeppelin into the UK&#8217;s Rock&#8217;n'Roll Hall of Fame.</p>
<p>Andrew Stockdale, Myles Heskett and Chris Ross will make no public statements at this time except to say that they are each really looking forward to making their new music over the years ahead.</p>
<p>In the meantime they simply ask all Wolfmother fans to please understand that in spite of their best efforts over a long period of time, they just could not find a harmonious way to work together and that has lead to the decisions announced today.</p>

<p>Their headlining <a href="http://www.splendourinthegrass.com/">Splendour</a> show was excellent and the crowd loved it. But one can&#8217;t help but feel they&#8217;re treading water, playing much the same set as when they played <a href="http://www.boudist.com/archive/2006/08/03/splendour_photos_scissor_sisters_wolfmother_gerling.php">Splendour two years ago</a>. And the same songs as when <a href="http://www.boudist.com/archive/2004/05/11/death_from_above_wolfmother.php">they played</a> at Candy&#8217;s Apartment over 4 years ago.</p>
<p><img src="http://boudist.com/images/WolfmotheDB05.jpg" alt="Wolfmother" width="500" height="333" border="0" /></p>
<p>Other acts like The Vines, The Grates and The Presets have all had new albums in that time, and it made their sets all the more entertaining and relevant.</p>
<p><img src="http://boudist.com/images/WolfmotheDB04.jpg" alt="Wolfmother" width="500" height="333" border="0" /><img src="http://boudist.com/images/WolfmotheDB03-2.jpg" alt="Wolfmother" width="500" height="750" border="0" /><img src="http://boudist.com/images/WolfmotheDB02-2.jpg" alt="Wolfmother" width="500" height="333" border="0" /></p>
<p>There is something rotten in the state of Wolfmother &#8211; and whether that manifests itself in disbanding, a line-up change, or an indefinite hiatus has yet to be revealed.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE</strong> (7/8/08) : So it&#8217;s <a href="http://www.boudist.com/archive/2008/08/07/wolfmother_to_continue_with_new_line_up.php">now official</a> Chris and Myles are leaving the band &#8211; Andrew continues the Wolfmother name.</p>

<p>Apart from a couple of acts i thought the lineup of Live Earth was rather underwhelming. Crowded House were an obvious highlight and had the entire stadium in the palm of their hand. It felt a bit like a homecoming as it was in Sydney they played the supposed farewell concert 10 years ago on the Opera House steps. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/live-earth-sydney/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/wolfmother-02.JPG" alt="Wolfmother" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>Being a Wolfmother tragic i also enjoyed their set, although it is getting a little tiresome seeing the same songs again and again. I look forward to them returning with something fresh.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/live-earth-sydney/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/sneaky-sound-system-13.JPG" alt="Sneaky SOund System Live Earth Sydney" border="0" /></a><br />
<a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/live-earth-sydney/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/missy-higgins-03.JPG" alt="Missy Higgins" width="500" height="333" border="0" /></a><a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/live-earth-sydney/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/jack-johnson-03.JPG" alt="Jack Johnson" width="500" height="333" border="0" /></a><br />
<a href="http://www.boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/live-earth-sydney/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/20070707_0165.JPG" alt="Live Earth Sydney" width="500" height="333" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>Taking good pictures of the artists at an event like this is a pretty hard task. The stage is massive, so you&#8217;re quite a distance from the performers, who are obscured by floor foldback speakers. Plus there&#8217;s a camera on rails moving in front of your shots. Not to mention the 60 odd accredited photographers squeezed into the pit, making mobility nigh on impossible. So the photos are rather uninspiring.</p>

<p>As i <a href="http://www.boudist.com/archive/2007/04/04/metro_and_the_great_escape.php">wrote previously</a>, i was the official photographer for <a href="http://thegreatescape.net.au/">The Great Escape Festival</a> two weeks ago. It was so much fun &#8211; both the festival itself and the job of taking photos.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a three day festival, which makes for lots of photos. First up is <a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/great-escape/day-1/">pictures from Day 1</a>. </p>
<p><a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/great-escape/day-1/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/the-vines-21.JPG" alt="The Great Escape Festival" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>The Vines were a popular act as the sun set on the main stage. As usual Craig <a href="http://flickr.com/photos/dreadfuldan/465557770/">trashed the stage</a> during the last song.</p>
<p><a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/great-escape/day-1/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/wolfmotheDB02.JPG" alt="Andrew Stockdale Wolfmother" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/great-escape/day-1/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/wolfmotheDB03.JPG" alt="Chris Ross Wolfmother" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/great-escape/day-1/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/wolfmother-16.JPG" alt="The Great Escape Festival" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>I was excited to see my perennial favourites Wolfmother headline Day 1. They&#8217;re still playing the same tunes they were at the little venues of Sydney 3 years ago, but they translate well to a big stage and the crowd adores them. </p>
<p><a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/great-escape/day-1/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/BenKwelleDB02.JPG" alt="The Great Escape Festival" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/great-escape/day-1/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/ben-kweller-15.JPG" alt="The Great Escape Festival" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>One of the great things about a AAA pass is getting to shoot the angles you can&#8217;t normally get from the pit. I love getting the audience in the same shot as the performer. </p>
<p><a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/great-escape/day-1/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/KakiKingDB01.JPG" alt="Kaki King" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>Kaki King was in a world of her own, head down playing guitar. She finished her song, saw me and gave me a cheesy thumbs up. </p>
<p><a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/great-escape/day-1/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/great-escape-festival-day1-5.JPG" alt="The Great Escape Festival" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>One of the best things about The Great Escape is the wide range of non-musical entertainment on offer. </p>
<p><a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/great-escape/day-1/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/great-escape-festival-day1-9.JPG" alt="The Great Escape Festival" border="0" /></a><br />
<a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/great-escape/day-1/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/great-escape-festival-day1-7.JPG" alt="The Great Escape Festival" border="0" /></a><br />
<a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/great-escape/day-1/"><img src="http://boudist.com/images/GreatEscaDB01.JPG" alt="The Great Escape Festival" border="0" /></a></p>
<p>See more <a href="http://boudist.com/gallery/v/gigs/great-escape/day-1/">photos from Day 1 of The Great Escape</a>. </p>

<p><a href="http://wolfmother.com/">Wolfmother</a> won <a href="http://www.grammy.com/GRAMMY_Awards/49th_Show/list.aspx">a Grammy</a> for Best Hard Rock Performance the other day.</p>

<p>That&#8217;s pretty wild that the little band i watched rise the ranks of the Sydney music scene beat acts like Tool and Nine Inch Nails for a Grammy.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve <a href="http://www.boudist.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-search.cgi?tag=wolfmother&amp;blog_id=1">written about Wolfmother</a> a lot on my blog, from the <a href="http://www.boudist.com/archive/2004/05/11/death_from_above_wolfmother.php">first time i saw them play</a>, to <a href="http://www.boudist.com/archive/2005/09/25/wolfmother_in_london.php">gigs in London</a>, <a href="http://www.boudist.com/archive/2006/08/03/splendour_photos_scissor_sisters_wolfmother_gerling.php">Byron Bay</a> and the <a href="http://www.boudist.com/archive/2006/02/01/mudvayne_wolfmother_et_al.php">Big Day Out</a>. Lead singer Andrew <a href="http://www.boudist.com/archive/2004/10/18/wolfmother_at_candys_the_other_week.php">commented</a> here once and a shot of him i took graced <a href="http://www.boudist.com/archive/2006/07/20/wolfmother_magazine_cover_photo.php">the cover of Guitarist Magazine</a>. They&#8217;ve been around as long as i&#8217;ve been taking music photos. </p>

<p>Like Australians tend to do when someone gets succesful, we criticise and try and bring them back down to earth. But i&#8217;ve always been an unabashed fan. They do what they do remarkably well and i&#8217;m glad they&#8217;re getting the rewards for it. </p>
